Sam, herewith a photo of the two keyboards. The white keyboard is the one I call a pop-up, which I want to get rid of. I prefer the black one (below). It forms a base for the iPad to stand on.

Thanks Sam.

Hi Gilly,

That looks like the Apple Smart Keyboard Folio - it connects to the iPad Pro via the connectors at the rear.

If no physical keyboard is connected via the pins at the rear, or by Bluetooth, then the iPad Pro’s software keyboard will always appear when typing is required. The black keyboard doesn’t have Bluetooth so it must be physically connected via the three pins on the rear of your iPad Pro to enable its use and to hide the ā€œpop up keyboardā€.

Try rebooting your iPad. Settings > general > shut down > switch back on.

I’ve seen my iPad Pro show the exact opposite where it doesn’t show any keyboard at all when I disconnect the smart folio. Perhaps iPadOS has a bug in it relating to keyboard detection, it should be automatic and the two keyboards should be mutually exclusive.

I’m now using the magic keyboard which, although slightly heavier, is a massive improvement in viewing angles and even has a backlit keyboard.

Thanks Sam. I'll try that.

However, the two keyboards are indeed mutually exclusive. The difficulty comes when the white one pops up first (as it normally does) and is hard to get rid of in order to use the black one.

iPad OS should recognise the physical keyboard is detected and not show the on-screen keyboard at all. The issue I saw was the exact opposite and a reboot fixed it.

Sam,

Help! I have shut down my iPad as you suggested, but now I don’t know how to restart it. Can you help me, please?
I am now on my iPhone.

I’ve discovered (from a Google search) how to restart the iPad, and I’ve done it.

It remains to be seen if that sorts out the keyboards!

Thanks for your help Sam.

Sam, I am happy to say that it seems to have worked! I haven't seen the pop-up keyboard since restarting. A huge relief! Thank you so much for your help.

FYI: I just connected my Logitech K380 and the onscreen keyboard slid down as expected. But, if I press a key on the top row of the K380, the onscreen keyboard re-appears and I can use either to type on ā€œat the same timeā€.

So, it’s possible to have both, but it should be YOUR choice, not that of iPadOS. Maybe there is a setting On the iPad or a stuck key on the Folio if it even offers an option to do the same thing.

The Smart Folio doesn’t have a button for showing a keyboard onscreen, it’s just automatically managed by iOS. You can dismiss the editing bar at at the bottom of the screen when using the physical keyboard but there’s no way to show the onscreen keyboard when the smart folio is attached (and registered via the port on the back as opposed to Bluetooth)
