Help with a photo

Dear fellow Sussex MUG members,

I have a photo of a dear colleague and friend from 2004 who has, sadly passed away. The photo is him having a coffee (with me, I took the photo). Unfortunately I also captured another customer sitting behind him.

I'd dearly love to get the photo 'shopped' so that the guy behind is removed. I've tried my hand using Affinity photo but my best efforts end up with a 'blob' in place of the guy.

It's only a small jpeg though and it may not be possible. Is there anyone who can edit the photo for me? It would mean a lot.

 – I thought it would look better to blur the backgound rather than delete it.
