I've been given a 'new' Mac to setup. It boots into macOS utilities but has no method of connecting to the internet. Command option R does nothing. Any suggestions?

I've connected it by ethernet and still no internet. Is it possible the network adapter could be knackered?

If I get a USB ethernet adapter will it work to reinstall the operating system?

Usb or thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter will work. WiFi should also work

Neither of these worked. It refused to boot from a USB drive either 😐

When you wrote β€˜new’ what did you mean by this? A model number might help?

Refused how? Flash question mark?Β

Have you tried SMC & PRAM resets?

When it boots into the recovery partition is the wifi able showing and able to join/see any networks?

It was a 2014 MacBook. SMC and Pram reset was done. When it booted into selecting a boot device no WiFi was selectable and no WiFi settings in recovery partition either. If I selected my USB boot drive I just got a no entry sign. In recovery I even tried adding a network connection via terminal without success.

To verify that I was doing things correctly I tried the same things on a similar age MacBook Air and it worked as expected there. I returned it to the owner now. Thanks anyway πŸ™‚
