Every time I open my iPad I am told "This application is not supported by this device", and this is repeated every few seconds until I put an end to it by turning off the iPad.

I have no idea what application it has in mind, since absolutely no application is ever open at the time.

Does anyone else experience the same thing, and does anyone know how I can prevent it from reappearing?

Hi Gilly,

Have you turned it off and on again?

If it won't let you, depending which one, there will be a way to force-restart it which might help (google for your model of iPad)

Good luck!

Yes, I have turned the iPad off and on again, several times. In fact, I have to do that to stop the notice popping up.

While I am "talking" to SMUG, I would like also to ask: Does anyone know, on the iPad, how to prevent the onscreen keyboard from popping up. Instructions all over the internet say to go to "Ease of Access", but there is no such thing on my iPad. There is "Accessibility", but that doesn't help.

All suggestions very much appreciated.

The keyboard should always appear when the insertion point is in a text field, unless you have an external keyboard attached.

If you want to hide it temporarily, tap the keyboard button in the bottom right of the iPad’s keyboard (on iOS15 anyway).

Thanks Stephen.

I do have an external keyboard attached (the normal black keyboard that comes with the iPad Pro). As a former PA, I am used to an ordinary keyboard and that (black one) is my preferred one. I would really like to be rid of the (white) on-screen keyboard that is constantly popping up.

I have tried googling my question using my iPad model number, but without success.

To tackle this one first, it sounds as if turning it on and off fixes it for a while? Have you noticed a pattern with what you did before it started?

I wonder if it's some utility like TextExpander which is trying to launch. The best clue is 'whatever you just did' so if it happens again, let us know what that is. You should only get that error when you actually try to launch something that is too old to run so it's odd that it keeps coming up, apparently launching itself.

Cheers,

Jason

Hi Gilly,

When your external keyboard is connected then the on-screen keyboard should not appear.

When I connect my iPad Magic Keyboard the onscreen one never appears (though I can force it to if I want) so if yours does when using it normally then something isn’t quite right.

Hi Stephen,

You are quite right! My iPad keyboard (black) is indeed always connected, so the onscreen (white) one should never appear. That is exactly the problem – it always appears and it drives me mad.

It seems to be quite a widespread problem, going by all the questions on the internet, but none of the solutions offered apply to my particular iPad model number.

I think I will try phoning Apple (in Dublin?) and having a chat with them about it.

Thank you so much, Stephen and Jason, for always being willing to help. It is very much appreciated.

Thanks Jason.

I have found that the "Application not supported" notice only appears on the iPad (not on my iMac). Also, it only appears when I first open the iPad from sleep, when there is absolutely no application open. Then I have to close it down again to stop the wretched thing flashing on each time I touch it to turn it off. That seems to work, though it is a nuisance having to close it each time I start it!

I am pretty sure there is no utility trying to launch, but I don't know how to find out for certain. I have decided to try phoning Apple (in Dublin), which I will do after the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

Meanwhile, thank you for being willing to help.

Hi Gilly

Can you take a screenshot of the error and send it here? Press the power and volume up buttons together to take a screenshot (or home button and power together if your iPad has a home button)

Sam, I simply do not believe it. Having harassed me for weeks, the dreaded “This application ...” has not appeared once today. Just when I was getting ready to photograph it for you! Maybe tomorrow. Or maybe the mere mention of your name has scared it off forever!

Thanks so much, Sam. I may get back to you tomorrow.

Hi Sam,

The "Application not supported" notice has started appearing again. I have just taken a photo, which I will send next. (I haven't discovered how to send at attachment to an email on iPad).
