hello Team

I have a 2021 mac Mini running Catalina 10.15.7 with pages 10.1.

I want to use the new mail merge facility in Pages 12.2, but to do this I need to upgrade the OS.

I have always been very nervous about this, and usually don't do it. (I wait until I buy a new mac every 4 years). However, I can't afford to buy a new machine now, and I think I need to overcome my fears!

I have plenty of storage on the hard disk (1 TB disk is half full), and  I have a time machine back up. Is there anything I should know or do  when doing all this or is it so straightforward that even a moron like me can do it? Can anyone anticipate any problems?

Thanks

Alex

Having a Time Machine backup is great, you could also do a drive clone using Carbon Copy Cloner but a Time Machine backup will suffice.

I’d upgrade straight to Ventura if possible, there’s no need to install Big Sur or Monterey. In future it’s definitely recommended to keep up to date with macOS upgrades, even if you wait for a .1 or .2 release, Catalina’s quite old now.

Hi Alex,

The only thing you might try first is running Apple Disk Utility, though I suspect the upgrade program might already run it as part of the upgrade process.

Make sure your primary apps will run on Ventura.

When you start the backup don’t be in a hurry, let it takes it’s time, could take an hour or longer. Don’t get anxious and restart your Mac Mini while it’s still updating. I find the process is in two parts, it restarts asking you to login and then takes another 20 minutes to sort itself out.

Apple are perfecting the updates process all the time and it should run very smoothly.

The restart-login-update process is usually due to FileVault. MacOS can’t upgrade itself without first decrypting the drive.

There might also be a firmware update involved, which could mean a long beep or multiple restarts, all entirely normal.

What Paul said! 🙂

I cannot remember the last time I did an OS update on any of my devices that did not go smoothly and “just work”.
