iPhone7 file transfer problem

Got a query with transferring images and videos from my iPhone 7 to my PC, not my Mac (I know I will probably go to jail for using a PC!)

I connect the iPhone7 to the PC and go to the DCIM folder. But I have 17 Apple folders, not just one, so have to go to each one and copy over. But even then, some files won't transfer and some that have transferred (.jpg and .MOV) won't play or display.

Also, some JPGs that show a correct number for example IMG.9398.jpg are followed by a video of the same name IMG. 9398.MOV. But to add insult to injury, I also have JPGs with completely different identities for example MHB09028.JPG, but open correctly.

To start with, I was connecting my phone using a USB cable and that opened a window on the PC where I could simply import additional files (not the whole lot) to the Photos app, but can't seem to do that now -says 'No photos or videos were found on this device'. Just get the window with the green progress bar wearing itself out. 'Looking for photos an videos . . .'

I'm hoping to get some brain cells stirring!

JPGs with identically named MOV files are the Live Photos taken on the Phone. iOS joins them together so they play the movie part of it when required. Have you tried VLC Player on the PC to play them?

Check in your iPhone’s Camera settings that’s set to save as JPEG not HEIC format, though I think Windows might now compatible with HEIC

Ah, I now understand the live picture bit, but why would I have 17 different Apple folders on my phone? 

What process would you recommend is best for transferring images and videos from an iPhone to PC?

What process would you recommend is best for transferring images and videos from an iPhone to PC? 

A few videos are not far off 130mb - I try to copy/paste or drag/drop from the iPhone folder on the PC to PC desktop, but error message "device is unreachable"? Are they just too big, although one at 2mb shows the same error?

Tried VLC player, but message 'Connection failed, VLC is unable to open the MRL'

Impossible to say why Apple would sort the images into folders, maybe it’s date-related, or location?

I’d just use iCloud Photo Library, it’ll back your photos online and also the Windows iCloud client will download them to your Pictures folder automatically

Imazing (https://imazing.com/download) might do the job. I always use that to get files from iPhone (but as Sam says, the Apple sync options do a lot of work).

I wonder if OS permissions have changed recently which would be why you can’t see them.
