Friends

I've asked before but never got too far so trying again.

Why in sending some photos in Messages (iMessage, not SMS) do they appear as per the attached image on macOS (latest iOS and macOS)

I can't find any setting and it's jolly irritating.

I suspect this is the HEIC (or not) settings. How are you getting them into iMessage? Presumably they're arriving like that too?

Thanks, Jason. On this occasion I was simply taking photos on iPhone from within iMessage (ie, in the conversation, instead of typing I tap the small camera button and take and send inline).

Then when looking at same conversation on Messages Mac, just get unopenable thumbnails?!

try this:

  1. Open the Settings app.

  2. Go to Settings > Camera > Formats.

  3. Select Most Compatible, and you are done. All future images or videos you take will now be saved in JPEG.

(taken from https://www.laptopmag.com/features/a-guide-to-heic-files-on-iphone-and-other-apple-devices)

the files will be larger so if you take a lot of photos and have a small memory capacity, you might want to find ways to save space/delete unwanted/etc.

I'm surprised it's still a thing but something in this chain may not be reading the photos in HEIC format (the article has details about which OSs support them)

Cheers,
J

Thank you so much, Jason.

Hugely helpful and appreciated. Would have assumed macOS Messages could read/show that format inline (as in Photos App can solve it) but doubtless more technical than I'll ever understand.

Thanks again

I'm assuming it worked;)

Yeah, it's always the way with bringing in improvements – can leave behind otherwise working systems, but if we didn't, we would all be using floppy disks (I bet they would have got them holding at least 20mb by now)

Do turn it off again one day when you've upgraded your hardware. HEIC is much much more efficient.

Thanks, Jason. Yes, it worked. And I'll turn it off in future as you say.

It just seems odd to me that the benefits of HEIC as you say, aren't much use when trying to sync all threads across all devices - which sort of seems the point - especially when Photos App can recognise the files too.

But I'm no developer, so doubtless it's not simple!
