Question about hard disk space

My friend has asked for my advice (!) about the problem described below. Any suggestions will be passed on and gratefully received.

This is the ‘problem’ I talked about the other day. I cannot believe that system data should take up so much space of my hard drive……is there anything I can do?

Sam, my friend has replied:

I am sorry to say I had never heard of Time Machine and it is not running automatically

Oh dear! She is fairly new to Apple, and I have a feeling she should book an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar. Or perhaps I can suggest that she contacts you as a private client?

Sure, give her my number and I can do a remote session. It’s quite often internal Time Machine backups which are waiting to be written to an external drive before they’re deleted. 

I’m currently away in rainy Scotland but around Sunday onwards
