Printer problems

Hi Smuggers. Can you advise me? My Canon Pixma printer TS5050 has gone AOL - my computer (MacBook Pro) and iPad say it is offline. It has worked reliably for 3 years. Nothing has changed. The connections are the same. The router is the same. Does “offline” mean the printer needs to be replaced? Virginia

Is the printer generally connected via wifi? Have you tried rebooting the printer & wifi router, or pushing the WPA buttons on the printer and router within 2 mins of each other? That should reset the wifi connection.

I have almost the same printer. It too has sometimes inexplicably gone “offline”. From memory, what I used to do to fix it was:-
1. unplug printer (or take out the power lead from the back of the printer)
2. plug it in again (or stick the power lead back in)
3. see if it reappears on line in System settings - scroll down to near the bottom of the list -“Printers and scanners”
4. see your printer (if it’s there) and click on it. This will reveal a new menu where if necessary you can click Remove the printer, then reinstall it.

Phil, thanks for your reply.  My daughter has helped me sort it (using Sam’s advice)
We brought the printer downstairs so that it was near router, rebooted and re-set it.  And now it works like a dream.  I thought it was connected to WiFi. But it was printing through the MBP which was connected to the printer.  Now it is standing alone and printing directly from iPad using WiFi.

Arrrgh don’t get me started on Canon Pixma printers!

I have one here, an MG3500 that also, a while ago, went mysteriously “off-line”. The reason, I discovered after much investigation, is that its waste ink reservoir is full, and once that happens to a Pixma, they take on the role of a chocolate tea pot. The fault is apparently fixable but means the printer has to be all but completely disassembled to gain access to said waste ink reservoir. It’s a perfect example of the kind of designed obsolesce that ought to be contrary to EU law (oh, hang on, I forgot for a moment). So, if any of you lovely SMUGs have time on your hands, and might enjoy the challenge of disassembling and reassembling a perfectly good MG3500, I have one here, it’s under a chair doing nothing.
