Hi folks,

Probably for the more technical readership...

I just got an iPhone 15 Pro which supports much faster data transfer speeds (USB 3.2). But when I connect it via the supplied cable to my MBP, it says it is transferring at USB 2 speeds (in System Profile). I know that USB C cables are an absolute swamp, all looking the same but offering different capabilities but did hope the supplied one would support 3.2.

On the apple site I could get either what looks like an identical cable or there's the Thunderbolt 4 USBC Pro cable for £129 but not even 100% sure that would work. And I don't need that kind of power (I am not saying it's not worth it, if it's worth it, reviews highlight just how well made they are)

Is there a simple way to work out which of the many, many USB C cables I seem to have already might support faster transfer speeds from the phone? Or a decently priced one that will go above USB 2? I can live with USB 2 but often use my iPhone essentially as a portable drive for large files, temporarily.

Cheers,

Jason

Incredibly the cable you get with your new phone doesn’t support the higher speeds!

See this support article for confirmation: https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT213839

So you do need to buy a cable for that. Which one I’m not sure as it’s so confusing now!!

I have this writhing pile of old USB cables, I have no idea how I ended up with them all, and now they are increasingly USB C as well, and they're still sending out crap cables!! <adds to pile>

It looks like the only way to be sure (and to remember which is which) is to get a Thunderbolt 4 one (backwards compatible, according to that page, so thanks for the tip) because that has the <checks notes> lightning symbol (it should also have, in tiny type, 'not that Lightning, just lightning'.)

Cheers,

Jason
