Hi all,

And now for something completely different …

Thanks to Federico Viticci over at MacStories.net I came across this app about 3 weeks ago. It is totally brilliant and unlike anything I’ve seen. It’s not a game, it’s a charming, inspired, playful, creative, smile inducing toy. It runs on the Mac via Steam and can also be downloaded for iOS and iPadOS. Using copy to clipboard and load from clipboard you can move your designs between devices if you have Apple’s Handoff enabled.

There are no instructions so it’s a journey of experimentation. The only thing I would say is explore the grid before you place a piece. Other than that, enjoy the discovery.

You can find it as Townscaper and here’s a little video on YouTube. Buy it and you won’t regret it I’m sure. That’s it.

Have fun,
Stephen

Ooh, thanks for this. I'm not a gamer at all, (ok, I admit I adore Monument Valley on iOS and Zelda on switch, but nothing else really!) but Townscaper looks utterly charming and compelling!

Thanks, Stephen.  I was looking for a new thing to do on my iPad as I have played solitaire and sudoku until it is coming out of my ears.

And whilst we're talking games, I discovered Wordle recently.
It's lovely. It's free. It's a simple web based game designed for a few minutes fun each day and NOT addiction (they only release one game per day, so once you complete it one day, you wait until midnight for the next!)

And apparently I 'don't do games' ?!?! ;)

Stephen - thanks so much for Townscaper!!!! I’ve dipped into it. I’m intrigued. I’m fascinated by some of the You Tube videos … I can see it is going to be absolutely absorbing.

I DO hope that, in some future developments, it will be possible to effectively customise and design buildings. I could remake Venice!!!!

So very much enjoying it.

Thank you

Andrew Lancaster.

That’s lovely Andrew. It’s a delightful combination of specific hard and fast rules plus some random behaviours. Within those you can sort of work out the design but designing Venice might be a big ask. Don’t forget about checking the grid before you’ve put down the first piece as it allows you to at least decide on some general layouts. I won’t say more because a) it’s fun finding out the surprises and b) there’s loads I don’t know!

I think a bit of fog, or rain or fish or whales might be a sweet addition to the birds, but who knows what might come along …
