Upgrade MacOS or not?

My MBP is currently running Mojave, but my wife's MBA is still on Sierra.

Given the spec (below) would anyone recommend upgrading the OS to High Sierra, Mojave or even Catalina. Or leave things as they are? I don't want to upgrade and then find the Air grinds to a standstill.

13 inch Mid 2012 MacBook Air (running 10.12.6 Sierra)
1.8 GHz i5 processor
8 Gb memory
250Gb drive (SSD) with 130Gb free

I’d go to Mojave at a minimum, Catalina if you don’t have any 32bit apps.

I’ll avoid Catalina for the 32 bit issue (same as my MBP). The APFS disk format won’t cause any issues on the older machine will it?

APFS only slows down on spinning disk drives, it should be fine on SSDs
