Hi, Everyone

1. How do I make this character: ř?

2. How about the ō?

3. How about the square in □Gong?

They are not coming over intact from the pdf, and I never could make sense of this chapter in the User's Guide.

Do you have access to The Indexer? I published an article about using diacritics in Sky 8 earlier this year. And there’s the ASI webinar on diacritics that I did two years ago.

- Are you using Adobe Reader or Acrobat Pro? They handle diacritics better than some other PDF readers. I learned the hard way after paying for PDF Xchange.

- You have to use a font that has those characters. Try Times New Roman or Tahoma.

- I don’t know what that square is. Perhaps a character that didn’t come through the design software?

Hi Mary,

It is surprising to hear that ř and ō cause so much problems in SKY 8
(in SKY 7 one can simply translate these characters).

Anyway, the SKY 8 User Guide recommmends to try Lucida Sans Unicode (a
sans-serif font with Unicode).

The square is likely to be an unrenderable character.

Using a Unicode font in Sky makes a huge difference. Go to Options>Preferences>Fonts and choose from the drop-down list.
Not only is Lucida Sans Unicode a good font for pasting from a PDF, but one called Georgia is too. I use that one because I like how it looks.
Once you have your font set, most diacritics should copy from a PDF and paste into Sky without a hitch.

I queried the author about the square. They said it's because the original character is illegible. Interesting!

Hopefully choosing another font solved Mary’s problem, or she was able to find the characters in the character map. When she said that they wouldn’t copy, I fixated on that and what can be done when the client doesn’t use Unicode characters, and that answer can be long. 

If there are only a few occurrences of special characters, finding and copying them from the Character Map is a good option. If there are a lot of such cases, then using the Translation Manager to get what you need is probably better. Or if you have to combine characters if what you need isn’t in Unicode, you have to know how to do that. That was in my head when I said it was a long answer.

In any case, when you use special characters, you have to tell Sky how to sort them. In Sky 8 go to Options > Index > Sorting, and in the middle you should see a button to Define alphabet groups. Open that and make sure the characters you are using are listed. If they aren’t, paste them in from the Character Map.

Hi Mary,

 

Both the ō and the ř are in the Character Map in Sky (in the Tools Menu). I’d ask about the square. But even if it is an actual character, you can also try copying from word (or even your email) into Sky…that usually works for me, and once it’s in there you can just copy within.
