I am thinking of leaving Microsoft and wondered if my SKY version will work on Linux. Are there any indexers who do use SKY successfully on Linux? If so, how did you make it work. Wine, Virtual Machine, or Dual Reboot? Are there any known problems I should be aware of? This maybe isn't interesting to the rest of the list, so if you prefer, you can contact me off list at pierke at isbnindex.nl

It is of interest to the rest of us. Please answer on-list.

Hi Pierke,

We used SKY in Linux for a short while a long time ago. We used virtualisation software. We had to run a copy of Windows in Linux to run SKY. Jon says he thinks there were Windows substitute programs but nothing that worked for us.

We gave up because it was too slow. Both logging in to Linux (since we used Windows for other things) and, from memory, when we were in SKY as well.

We used it with LibreOffice. That worked pretty well but there were a few small problems, eg, for some reason 'see' references came out with a capital S all the time. I also found layout inconsistencies (can't remember details, but they caused challenges with clients).

So we gave up. That was probably at least 20 years ago, so it is possible that with a different machine and different support software you could have a better experience. Jon is thinking of moving from MS-Office to LibreOffice atm. Easier when constant workload is not such a problem.

Best of luck,

Glenda and Jon

Thanks, Glenda, for your elaborate reply. Kamm also gave me the advice not to go that route. So, I'll have to keep Microsoft or opt for Linux with the new and free Picardy software. I am still not sure which way to go.
