I saw about 30 of your Redpolls in the middle of Dyea Rd. picking at the dirt the DOT spreader truck had left behind.

Also, for everybody, the official name for the lumped together "common" and "hoary" redpoll is simply "Redpoll" with code REDP.

It seems Skagway has an uncommonly large number of redpolls this winter. Is that the observation of others or am I just noticing them for the first time? I have a flock of probably 40 or so in my yard this week as well. I don’t recall seeing them in the yard in winters past.

My impression is that having a large flock around town this winter was uncommon compared to recent years.  But also I can remember years (within past 25) years when a number of flocks were seen.  Seems to fit what we see here, since they aren't the type of migrators that always return to the same places, and respond to amount of food available year-to-year.

Any others with longer memories than mine?
