2 questions here. Relevant software and hardware info is below.

1) Is it possible for me to disable ringer volume changes on a large number of phones? We have users at our medical centers turning down the volume, and we would like to disable that. We would like to put it at a set volume. I am aware that it uploads a unique config file when they make these changes that keeps them persistent through a reboot.

2) This has come up before, but in July 2014, it was said that it would be fixed 'soon'. I really need to be able to disable the DND soft key on phones. For the reason above, and also to prevent it being pressed accidentally. I asked if this was indeed available in 5.1.1 and if so when would 5.1.1 be supported? The answer I got (not sure he is an eZuce employee) was yes in 5.1.1 and support for it is coming soon. Anyone have an estimate on that one?

If you go above VVX firmware 4.1.7 make sure that you test all of the functionality you need.  We were not able to complete all of our QA with 5.0 and 5.1 firmware (whatever subversion was available at the time).

I am (and have always at this company) been on 5.0.1 P. That is what we were advised to use at the time of our implementation. Is this version still as supported as it was in January 2014? IS it less supported than it was then? Any word on when 5.1.1 would be completely supported?

This is all a Polycom issue.  It was resolved back in Polycom_UC_Software_5_1_1_rts_1_8_B_release_sig_split.zip.

Here is a custom file that will work to remove DND, and also changes the password from default also.

Put it in the TFTP root directory in a file – I call mine mypolycom.cfg, and add it to groups/phones as a custom file.  I’ve been using it without issue for at least 6 months or longer.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>

<feature

   feature.doNotDisturb.enable="0"

   feature.forward.enable="0"

/>

<auth device.auth.localAdminPassword.set="1" device.auth.localAdminPassword="789"/>

You might try playing around with this as well - tone.chord.ringer.x.level.y   Permited values -57 to 3.   Y = 1 to 6   Page 424 of the 5.2 admin guide.

I think it’s important to remember as open source, we can’t really expect that every release of Polycom Firmware will be supported unless someone is contributing it.    You can run any version with sipxcom.  Simply define one of the pre-existing firmware numbers – I chose the highest, and put the code you want under that.  In this case, its defined as 5.0.1 firmware, with the indicated zip file uploaded to it.  The system will create the directory and put the files there, and any phone that you define with that version will have their {mac}.cfg file created to look for its firmware files, etc. there.

I can't guarantee any particular Polycom firmware will ever be fully supported.  Polycom breaks things in their firmware all the time (right Peter K?).  If you have one that's working for you, stick with it.  All I can tell you is what we QA'd openUC code with.

See my post on sipXcom BLA functionality from testing this weekend.  I had to go back to 4.0.5c to get BLA's to appear correctly in sipXcom.  They won't go back and magically fix 4.0.7 or 4.0.8c to make it work like 4.0.5c.

I should caveat my past post with this – we don’t use Shared Line Appearance on the Multiple systems running that version to remove DND.

Actually, I don’t sue SLA anywhere.  Life is good!

I'm a paying openUC customer, so ours is not exactly on source. We use polycom phones because that is what eZuce recommended and I had experience with them. I would like to go with a firmware eZuce will somewhat support.

I was not on the latest version of openUC. I did not realize I needed to change my repo file to get the 14.10 version. I see the 5.1 and 5.2 templates in the GUI now. That is good news. Should I bother searching for DND disable and Ringer volume in the GUI, or is a custom file still definitely needed?

There is an option in phone -> line -> registration to have server handle DND. I think if you turn that on the DND button will be there but it won't do anything. Have you tried that yet? I actually tried it earlier today and thought it worked fine.

This is the mailing list for the Open Source product, so there is no way of knowing when someone is on the commercial version when they post here.  If you are going to post on this list, with regards to needs on the Commercial version, I would recommend you state those facts, as the resulting answer will probably have different details, and create less confusion.

That's a polycom configuration option...  It probably just breaks DND on the phone altogether.  That's one way to disable it I guess.

While the GUI has options for the newer firmware it doesn't mean that we've QA'd those versions of firmware.

Thanks,
  Mike

Mike,  with the new versions, sipxcom is just allowing for the placement of the files in the correct directory.  Is that accurate, or are the templates also bringing in new comfiguration parameters that are exposed in those new version.  Or does it just depend?

It just depends.  That's the purpose of the "Profiles template version" setting that's on the first page of the phone / phone group configuration pages.

In general to get a new phone firmware set added quickly we've just carried the previous firmware settings forward.  With so many options in the Polycom phone configurations we don't go back through all of the configuration options for each of the models...  that would take forever.  If there's a specific new feature that we're going after then we'd adjust the template for that in the new firmware template.

As we move this to swarmcom I'd like to re-think this a bit and simplify the phone configuration options.  The original thinking in sipXconfig was to throw in ALL polycom configuration options and set the defaults where we want them.  This of course leads folks to hanging themselves and assuming that they can change certain options (like let server handle DND) and that those settings would work...  well they won't.  That being said, somebody in the open source world might want to take sipXconfig and use the code and utilize that feature in the system they are building.  It's a functionality / usability trade off.

Mike

Regarding item 2 (this should be in a different thread) - We had the SIP Core team take another look at this just to make sure that the current implementation is correct and that there isn't a way around this problem now.

The key to understanding the problem is that hunt groups in sipXcom / openUC are forked calls and not handled by a B2BUA.

Last year we had designs on re-building hunt groups in FreeSwitch to get some better HG functionality.  The roadblock we ran into was that this would not work with high availability and it would also add server load.

HA/Multi Server Problem: Consider FS on two servers with the same HG configured.  If we wanted to have hunt groups that would start ringing the person in the list where the HG left off, how would FS on server 1 know where HG on server 2 left off?  What would you do in a very busy system where the same HG might be being used?  This would lead to admins being confused as to why the HG is not working as they had configured it.  Other systems may get around this with an active/passive configuration or by not supporting hunt group functionality in a HA setup.

Load Problem: Consider FS on two servers configured to always start at the first user in the list (the functionality we have now).  This would work OK, however now that call is anchored on the FS instance.  Server load is increased because FS must 'own the call'.  Additionally other servers can't help process call responses and if connectivity to the server is affected in any way the call fails.

The only way to deal with cascading hunt groups is to use another line registration on phones that are part of the first hunt group that you want to ring again and put that other extension into the second hunt group.

You could also utilize Call Queue to address this, however the call flow is no longer highly available.  If that server hosing Call Queue is down, so is your ringing for that call flow.

Here's the official response to this issue that Joegen submitted:

This is not an issue with sipX but a SIP Protocol issue in general. The registrar does send 201 as part of the contact-set for HG2. However, when the call to 201 is retried, it gets rejected by the 201 UA because it already received a transaction with the same prior dialog identity but with different via branch. This gets treated as a "merged" request and rejected.

Here is the 302 from the registrar. Notice that 201 is listed as a fallback together with VM:

Understood. I did. My post had this at the bottom. Most of my issues apply the same to openUC and sipxcom.

Thanks. We will use the custom config for now as there appears to be a big in the GUI option for this. I will let you know what we see on the ringer volume setting. That seems like the option you specified might work.

Hi Matthew - given that you are going down the custom config file issue for DND, consider enabling remote pcap and screencapture capability to help with troubleshooting. I'm particularly anxious to get to 5.1.3+ firmware for these reasons besides disabling DND ...

As an FYI, for security purposes, Polycom recommends only enabling the pcap feature on an ass needed basis, and then disabling it.

Not to hijack this thread, but while discussion adding DND to a custom file, I like the idea of changing the password as well so users aren’t making admin changes to the phone.  It works well.

+1 on this. Newer polycom firmware versions will also put an exclamation point if the default admin password hasn't been changed - it really annoyed our end users. We are also disabling DND and changing the default passwords via a custom config - it's been working well.

Good feedback Todd and Nathaniel. In regards to the default password, Polycom 5.2.2 firmware (maybe earlier) actually generates a warning and notification on the top right hand side of VVX phones when the default password is not changed.

In regards to security issues around pcap and screen capture, our new systems with VVX phones at release 5.x have a diagnostics.cfg file that enables pcap and screencapture functionality. It gets applied to problem phones as needed when issues arise. DND softkey and new phone login password is applied to all VVX phones running release 5.1.x and above.
