Remembering Dr. Kais Dukes

Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un ("Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Allah we shall return"). It is with deep sorrow and acceptance of Allah's will that I announce the passing of Dr. Kais Dukes.

Dr. Dukes was renowned for his invaluable contribution to the understanding of the Quran through his pioneering work, the Quranic Arabic Corpus. https://corpus.quran.com

This project has served as a vital resource for scholars, students, and enthusiasts around the world, offering profound insights into the language and intricacies of the Holy Quran.

His dedication to bridging gaps in knowledge and fostering a deeper appreciation for the Quranic text has left an indelible mark on the academic community and beyond.

May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus and provide comfort to his loved ones. I kindly request your prayers for Dr. Dukes and his family.

I had the great pleasure of working with Kais on a couple of occasions and can speak highly for his professionalism, commitment, creativity, and attention to details. I was heart broken to hear of his sudden passing at such a young age.

What a loss. Had the time to discuss with him a few things about Qura'an related things when he joined our group around 9 months ago. Three weeks ago I remembered him missing for some time. Then a few days later, I was shocked by his passing via linkedin post. His heritage will be remembered.

Thank you for sharing this, Wajdi. It's really sad to hear about Kais. I had the chance to work with him early in my career, and he was truly a kind and humble individual. I remember our last discussions were about the second version of the Quranic corpus he was working on. It's a significant loss for our community.

For every being, his time is written, but it still brings great sadness at the loss we have experienced.

This famous Hadith comes to mind when considering the loss of Dr. Dukes:

Abdullah ibn Amr reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Allah does not withhold knowledge by snatching it away from his servants, but rather he withholds knowledge by taking the souls of scholars, until no scholar remains and people follow ignorant leaders. They are asked and they issue judgments without knowledge. Thus, they are astray and lead others astray.”

A group of us were assisting him on: https://github.com/kaisdukes/quranic-corpus

His goal was to rebuild the corpus entirely using SVG (not generated images) and to complete the i'raab of the Quran Corpus (there are some missing i'raab of surahs in the middle of the Quran).

May Allah Reward Dr Dukes for his niyyah. May Allah Elevate him to the highest stages of Jannah and make his work a sadaqa jariya that benefits Muslims until the end of times. Aameen.
