Dear FESA representatives, dear Shogi friends,

The organization of international sporting events in Belarus is to be viewed extremely critically in view of the human rights responsibility of sport associations.

Already awarding the European Shogi Championships to Minsk was a mistake.

At least now with regard to the scandalous events at the Olympics in Tokyo, this is becoming increasingly clear. Athletes are threatened if they do not get the appropriate results. Criticism - also sporting, not just political - threatens life and limb.

I am truly sorry for the players. However, a dictatorial regime must not be given the opportunity to show a perfect world. The ongoing state terror (by a government that was actually voted out of office) against its own people leads to the conclusion that it is indispensable to protect all players by ensuring that no sporting event in Belarus has an official character of a continental championship.

Therefore, I am calling on FESA and its member associations to correct its decision and to deprive Minsk of hosting ESC/WOSC!

with kind regards

Marc, shogi.de

Dear shogi friends!

As far as you probably know at a general vote of the FESA member countries
in June it was approved the decision to hold the postponed ESC/WOSC 2020 on *August
19-22, 2021* in Minsk. Let me share the latest good news and updates on it.

1. At the moment we have 43 pre-registered players from 4 countries (and
expect more relying on the number of active Minsk players alone).

2. Since July 14, *no self-isolation* for vaccinated arrivals in Belarus!
The new resolution removes the self-isolation requirement for arrivals with
vaccination certificates. It also cancels the PCR test requirement for them
too. The Belarusian government has also cut the period of self-isolation to
7 days (if you are unvaccinated and are from the country of the so called
red zone).

3. Less than a month is left before the event, and if you want to join us,
hurry up with the plane tickets. Since there is still no direct flight
between the EU and Belarus, I would recommend paying attention to Turkish
Airlines and Istanbul as a hub.

More information you can find at the event website:
http://euro2020.shogi.by/en/

P.S. These days we hold the 4th Magister Match in Minsk: Sergey Korchitsky
(5 Dan) vs Anton Starykevich (4 Dan) (2h + 60s byoyomi per player). This
Sunday join the live stream of the 2nd game at https://youtu.be/If4SuCeiEL4

Kind regards,
Andrei

I disagree. The politization of sports events is bad and we should not contribute to this. Sport prides itself as being a bridge connecting over all borders of ideology, bringing together people that disagree on many issues in the shared love for a common activity. Throwing this away to make a pointless gesture would be unwise. Larger organizations than FESA have done so and it never availed to anything beyond inconveniencing those that want to do nothing but enjoy their sport.

Of course, I respect your opinion very much, Daniel. However, it is not about the question of politicization - but about protecting the participants. I can very well distinguish between current political power and the level of sport. By the way, there are also many counterexamples of large, braver associations that have canceled their events or withdrawn the hosting from Belarus. Maybe FESA is neither big nor brave if it has an opinion on it.

Dear Marc,
Just for your information. Not a single regime, neither dictatorial, nor democratic, nor even anarchist, had never anything to do with the organization of European shogi tournaments. Here in Europe there are no sponsors or specific benefits and all shogi events are organized by people who have the only motivation to love this game. And FESA is an association of such people where decisions are made on the basis of general voting, not one-sided or bravely or at the will of Marc or Andrei.
With best regards,
Andrei
