Hello All,

I am relatively new to shogi (having just learned the game in 2022), but have been absolutely enraptured with it since starting on this journey of sorts. I have also been extremely jealous of how easy it is to find organizations like FESA and the American Go Association and all the data they have on their tournaments and players.

To that end, I have spent a fair amount of time scouring old Shogi-L archives for past tournament results and have found and organized almost all of the results from 1996 through 2025: Tournament Results Folder

I have also used this data (and some from FESA) to put together a "database" (which is just a spreadsheet) with basic info on the players, clubs, and tournaments that I was able to find: US Shogi Database

There are a lot of gaps, particularly prior to 2010 and between 2015 and 2023 and I was hoping someone out there might have some old tournament results saved on their hard drive? Perhaps it's just me, but I rather like seeing the history of American Shogi, and I think new new players could find it exciting to be a part of a growing organization of players from around the country.

If anyone else enjoys old records like these or knows where to find more, please let me know.

Thank you, and have a lovely day.

Hi Vincent,

My name is Tommy Iwasaki, and I currently serve as a board member of the United States Shogi Federation (USSF). I believe we may have met briefly at one or two shogi tournaments in the past — I remember seeing you there — though we haven’t had the chance to formally introduce ourselves or chat much.

Apologies for my delayed reply — I hadn’t been checking my Gmail regularly for a while.

I just came across your email and wanted to say how much I appreciate the time, dedication, and passion you’ve put into collecting and organizing the history of shogi in the U.S. Your work on compiling tournament results and building a player/club/tournament database is truly impressive — and incredibly valuable for preserving our community’s history.

I completely agree that these records can inspire new players and strengthen our sense of connection as a nationwide shogi family. I’d be happy to continue the conversation and explore how we might collaborate or share resources. Please feel free to reach me at in...@us-shogi.org anytime.

Thank you again for your contribution to U.S. shogi, and I look forward to working together to expand and preserve our history.

Best regards,
Tommy Iwasaki
