Hi all, Ken, great job last night. My take from what mayor Lauretti said
was, he wants us to put together a list of places that we think could
use a clean up and there's funds available for beautification projects.
So, at our next meeting let's put together a list.

Thanks Gil.

Thanks for your attendance. Also Dana and Sharon were there as well.

I followed some guy speaking who seemed to mock the Anti Litter
Committee as he saw the new members to be approved on the agenda.
He indicated that committees don't work and questioned how much clean
up the Anti Litter committee did.
I clarified in my opening remarks that our committee was not
responsible for cleaning up the city, rather
coordinating/communicating certain events, coordinating Adopt a Street
and spreading awareness.

The BOA and Mayor did seem to listen intently.

Initially the Mayor seemed to defend the town's efforts that they do
clean up and would support us with police or trucks with lights if we
coordinated clean ups on dangerous roads.

He second waved me back in to say they do have beautification plans of
"Adopt a Garden"

After the overall meeting he did approach me and Sharon to ask what we
may need from him.

I took the opportunity which may not have come across in my speech
that we are more looking for town help to take the lead in a more
changed environment to have regular cleanups at our stressed Nells
Rock Rd and Mill Street
locations.
He said we can make an appt with his admin to see him and let him know
what specifically we want from the town.

So as Gil says in this email thread, at our next meeting, let's agree
on what/when/where in a list we can go back to him with.

The mayor does seem to be sympathetic to our concerns.
Maybe this is a good start forward for us to strike while the iron is hot.

See you in a few weeks at our meeting

Last, the two nominations to round out our committee were a resounding approval.

Good morning!

Sharon Herman has been keeping me updated on this. So happy the meeting seemed to go well last night and that the Mayor is willing to listen.

My quick 2 cents - The clean-up project originally scheduled routine clean ups on busier roads like Bridgeport Ave. We have ceased doing that more recently as those roads are too dangerous without support from Police or Fire to block off sections of the road for volunteers, especially considering many of our volunteers are high school students.

If the Litter Committee can secure a designated contact / support staff from either the PD or Fire Dept, with the Mayor's backing, that would be a great first step to allowing local clean up groups, whether they be scout groups, corporate outings, litter committee, or the clean up project, etc to helping address the litter issue in busier sections of the City. We have worked with the Fire Department in the past but SFD is all volunteer, so we always needed someone to say yes to helping and sometimes they would, but sometimes they wouldn't be able to find any volunteers. Personally, I think it should be a community policing initiative using some of the nip bottle $$ to pay for the PD staff to block the roads.

As always, thank you all for your work and advocacy on this!!! Feel free to let Cheryl or I know how we can be helpful.

I agree with Matt.

An issue of importance of which we need a response is who from the city can establish a liaison with a contact from the state to get them to come when we need them to maintain Bridgeport Avenue, River Road and the entrance/exit ramps.

In addition, our Mayor bought up the idea of getting the word in schools to students to not litter. A slogan is a good idea.

Thank you,
Sharon Herman

Matt and Sharon.

Good points, but I think we are confusing the need for city help on busier roads between STATE roads and LOCAL roads.

I was under the impression that STATE roads ( Like BPT Ave and Exit ramps) we locally should not entertain doing.  Thus obtaining Shelton Police/Fire assist is not an option.  Rather, as I stated to the BOA and Mayor, we need help with obtaining a STATE contact when we feel STATE roads and areas need some work.   We will have to follow up on this when we next have any meeting with the Mayor.

The mayor did say, if we contacted his office to coordinate a clean-up on local busier roads ( Like Mill Street or Nells Rock Road) he would authorize the use of Police help and/or a Town truck.

But I also stressed to him that residents/scouts/etc....   should really not have to do this work on these dangerous and highly littered roads.    I told him I expect the town to do these areas.

We'll keep at it.

Ken,

Totally agree with the sentiment re state and local roads. A State liaison would be helpful, much like a city contact in SFD or PD.

Ultimately I look at litter clean up as the more the merrier. Everyone, from volunteers to state and local depts / agencies have limited capacities. If we all chip in on different occasions (state/parks&rec/volunteers/etc) collectively it will go a long way to limiting litter that gets to our waterways and will beautify the town.  I don't ever want to feel limited by who "should" do what. At least that's how we've operated the cleanup project.

As always, thank you for your work on this!!

To clarify, when we have asked Shelton fire to help close a section of a state road down (Bpt Ave) for litter cleanup they have done so, if they could find a volunteer.

Thank you to everyone involved.

It is a multi faceted project.

If we can get the state to maintain state roads and the city to maintain dangerous city roads, it will free up volunteers to concentrate on less dangerous city roads.

Garbage cans work. Perhaps we can also discuss if there are funds available to increase the number of cans and collection service.

Thank you,
Sharon

Thanks for speaking to the Aldermen and Mayor, Ken. Ignore the negative people out there. We always get them. We've been mocked for our efforts to build hiking trails, and then the pandemic happened and suddenly we got a lot more respect. Some people are just complainers.

Something to consider for using volunteers to clean up Nells Rock or Mill Street: The city needs to completely and aggressively close down the road for it to be safe for volunteers, not just have a truck or a cop or some barricades. Years ago we attempted to close Mill Street for a cleanup with cooperation with the PD, and they gave us big barricades and signs to do so. The road was open only to local traffic. But people just drove around the barricades and then went speeding down the road at 50 mph. Never did that again. It was almost more dangerous because participants were not as watchful for traffic. We were not able to get any additional support for safety for future cleanups and stopped doing them. When city crews clean up the Mill or Nells Rock, they have a big truck completely blocking the road and moving along with the city crews, and maybe a cop. I got stuck behind one once and couldn’t get to where I needed.

Once the Constitution extension is complete, perhaps it will easier to close down Nells Rock.

Yes! And there will be less of a litter problem as more thru-traffic takes the new road.
