Hi All,
I'm embarrassed to say...

1). I've never done a Perm
2). I've never ridden to the Point Reyes Lighthouse (the someway common ride that most do from SF...comes out to around 200km).

This year I'm looking to do the R12 award. And figured it was a good time to get my first perm under my belt. And first trip to the Point Reyes Lighthouse.

Does anyone know if the Lighthouse route is a perm? And if so, would you mind sending it?

Here's the route that I'm referencing. But obviously, open to whatever the approved route would be.

Appreciate the help. Sorry if this is something that's already obvious.
Cheers
lisa

You can use the wonderful Geo search visual search to see if there are any matching routes: https://rusa.jkassen.org/geosearch/
It looks like it is not an approved perm, the only perm that goes out there is Skip Two Mile-ou: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/42020249
Alternatively you could submit a route based on the lighthouse route, but it would need to be a little longer, since your linked ride is under 200k.

Hi Lisa,

The SFR RideWithGPS route library also has a spatial search interface, through which you can find the Point Reyes Lighthouse 200K route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/1770953

This was all before my time, but I'm given to understand that SFR no longer runs this lovely route because of permit troubles with the National Park Service, who appear to fail to comprehend that a brevet would add a negligible number of cyclists to an already heavily biked road through Point Reyes National Seashore. A pity. (I believe the same "logic" has prevented SFR from running the Pierce Point 200K - itself originally designed as a replacement for the lighthouse route - since 2023. Dillon Beach 200K, which gets as close to NPS land as possible, is the latest and hopefully final consolation prize.)

I can't imagine there would be any problem with registering the Point Reyes Lighthouse 200K as a RUSA perm and then riding it as such. It's a route that, in my opinion, deserves to be ridden.

 - Drew

PS. Your Strava route actually goes to Pierce Point, not to the Point Reyes Lighthouse!

Really appreciate all the insight. Thanks so much!

And I’ll look to submitting that route for the approval.

As you've probably found, the RUSA website has great info on the perm submission process. Have fun!!!

And I know you said R12, but if anyone's doing P12, or wants to get more directly out to the Lighthouse or Pierce Point, there's the #04682 - Nicasio to Lighthouse, #04811 Petaluma - Point Reyes Lighthouse and #04808 Petaluma - Pierce Point. The Petaluma ones start/finish near the SMART train station. Yay bikes and trains!
Perm On!

Skip two mile lou is definitely absolutely already an approved perm, and it goes to the lighthouse, unlike the strava route you referenced earlier, which appears to go to Pierce Point Ranch or something further? Registering for the perm is easy, especially since the perm # is easy to remember (3333). Just sign in to your RUSA account and perm reg is pretty easy to find.

If you want to research the perm route you can read my writeup from riding it in March of 2023.
  • Something good to know as well is that Inverness suffered major flooding last week so be careful when riding out there. The Inverness Store took on lots of water and there were many big trees down. I'm sure it's all cleaned up by now but if you're depending on the Inverness Store for a food stop you might want to call and check to make sure they will be open.
  • Speaking of closures, the route uses Bolinas Fairfax Road, which will only be open weekends after January 7.
Happy perm-ing!

Since the RUSA website account was mentioned here, I wanted to add some background to just what that is so that people might not get confused.

When you join RUSA you have a membership record. The Website Account is *not* created automatically. If you want a website account, you have to create one yourself. Currently, that website account is only ever used for the perm program so if you've never registered for a perm, you likely don't yet have that account. Note also that if you have that account, it is *not* the place to update your membership record. That would be done by either renewing or submitting an address change.

I'm submitting this as a perm to RUSA.   It was the first brevet I ever did, (January 2006) and so this route has a special place in my heart.
I moved the start to Crissy Field, East Beach for better parking options, and have the return leg taking the east side of the GG bridge, with cue sheet telling how to use the "buzzer" gates if locked. I always liked how our SFR cue sheets say "don't be alarmed by the LOUD buzzer"...it will galvinize even the most sleep deprived randonneur.

Now a RUSA perm #5358, see RWGPS: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/49495433

Thanks to Crista the Permanista for approving this at RUSA. Also, since it's a permanent, not a brevet, you get 4 min. per km, so 13 h 48 min to complete for RUSA credit. Time to grab a chowder at the Marshall Store, or somethng at the Bovine Bakery!
Cheers,
Kitty
