But, as was foretold, no progress without sacrifice: Westside Rd just recently washed out near River Rd, up by Guerneville. (A well worthwhile trade, I think.)

O. Henry once said of New York City, “it’ll be a great place if they ever finish it.” Likewise, we must continue to wait for that hoped-for day when all the region’s roads are simultaneously open.

Speaking of that, I heard a rumor that Lopes has been reopened. I haven't heard a peep about that. Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Rob, unfortunately Lopes Rd. is still closed.  I belong to the Benicia club and we've been keeping a close eye on the situation.  There's been a lot of work completed to shore up the hillside to protect the freeway but the hillside above Lopes road needs further stabilization.  Plans and funding requests for the remaining work are scheduled to be submitted to FEMA by the cities of Fairfield and Benicia next month.

To make matters worse, the other route to Fairfield, Hunter Hill, the bike trail that runs along I-80, experienced a big landslide last week.  That trail is now also officially closed.  I understand that there are a couple of feet between the fence on the highway-side of the trail and the edge of the slide where daring cyclists can squeeze through, but the whole site is considered unstable.  Other options to get to Fairfield by bike are going through Vallejo and American Canyon and going east up American Canyon Road to McGarry, which is on the other side of the path/slide.  Or you can continue through Am Can to Hwy 12.  Not my favorite option.

Is “Hunter Hill” also called “McGary Rd”? Is that what is now closed?

Hunter Hill is the rest area on the other side of I-80. The Solano Bikeway is the bike path that has recently closed: https://dot.ca.gov/caltrans-near-me/district-4/d4-news/2025-02-18-i80-bikeway-closure

Thanks for the heads up, Kalani; it's too bad to hear that access to the North Bay has gotten even worse. We'll figure something out, I'm sure.

Latest chapter in the ongoing Lopes Rd/Solano Bikepath saga...

They've closed the bike path north out of Vallejo on the east side of Hwy 80 from 8/15-10/11 to repair the damage from the landslide in March.  Hopefully, they finish early, as the Winters 200k is scheduled for 10/11, and this is best alternative to Lopes Road as a route through to Cordelia .

Meanwhile, Lopes is still closed and, as of earlier this month, the Lopes Road Project is waiting on FEMA money to complete the repairs (not holding my breath).  Some scofflaws and ne'er-do-wells are trespassing, using a private path on the other side of the freeway to get around all of the obstacles.  DO NOT RECOMMEND!

A recording of an August 7 webinar about the Lopes Road repair project was just posted here, in case anyone is interested:

https://youtu.be/0uK4RTEVLLo?feature=shared

The latest estimate during that webinar was a construction start in April 2026 for completion by December 2026.

Here in the East Bay there are also drainage and slide repair projects underway on Tunnel Rd in Oakland and Wildcat Canyon Road in Berkeley and Orinda, which are affecting bike access, but all of which will be completed this year. If anyone has questions about any of these please let me know.
