I live in the Central valley and thinking of doing my 1st 400k this weekend at the Hopland 400k.  Hotels are crazy expensive in the city for 2 nights and riding to the start.  Thinking I could stay in south SF which is cheaper and drive to the start.  Where can I park safely?  I saw something about Pier 39 parking which is $20 a day if I reserve in advance, but have to be out by midnight they say.  I am thinking I would be back around 1am.  No idea how that works.

Wondering if anyone can share advice about the Pier 39 parking, or other safe places to park.  I don't want to arrive back and find my car gone.  I would literally cry after riding all day and just wanting warmth, food and sleep. :)

Thank you in advance

Greg

Greg,

I travel from Sacramento to do these SFR brevets, and have successfully parked at Main Post (Presidio) several times. It's quiet (in a good way) and I think it's around $12 for 24 hrs. Broken car windows are a bigger concern than vehicle theft, IMO. You can increase your chances of coming back to your vehicle with windows intact by not leaving any electronics in the car. Thieves use Bluetooth scanner apps to case electronics in parked cars.

If you are looking for a hotel within riding distance, the Comfort Inn at Lombard and Van Ness is about a 3 mile ride to the start and has gated underground parking ($30/day).

Same with Howard, I've always parked at the Main Post.  Some recent weird issues with the parking machines prevent you from buying a ticket before 8am but no one that I'm aware of has had any issues for the past... 6-8 months.

Another option is to park at Daly City BART and ride to/from the start/finish.

For those driving to the Peninsula or South Bay, it allows you to skip the standstill traffic outbound of SF and reduces the driving time.

Hi all,

What about parking at Stone Street (Storey and Lincoln cross road)?

I always park there in the past. Any issues I should be aware of?

Thanks, Raphaël

Raphael,

That was the secret free parking spot that no one was supposed to know about. Remember to back your car in.

Sorry for the confusion. Parking there is not free. The secret shall remain a secret.

I hate driving out of SF and would not recommend it anyway, much less after a 400k.

In regards to the confusingly nicknamed Stone Street parking (There is no Stone Street anywhere near the Lincoln and Storey intersection where this parking lot is located. I don't know when that name began to show up on Google Maps but it might have been about the time the meters no longer started working at 5am. I wonder if that is the name of the company that runs the meters.), the main problem is that so far this year, the parking meter kiosk does not begin operation until 8am.

When I parked there for the 300km others told me that they have been parking there for a while without paying and have not been ticketed.  I did not get a ticket that day. I can not predict if that will happen again.

I have been told of another lot very near by that was signed as 'free on saturday' but I do not know the exact location of that. Perhaps those that suggested that to me can elaborate?

some of us parked here for the Healdsburg 300k.  sat parking is free.  open parking lot is in a pretty secluded area away from foot traffic.   all our cars survived with no breakin issues

this is slightly up the hill from the stone street parking lot (where the parking meters did not work early in the morning)

When I was more active and after SF and the Park started restricting parking I would park on East Rd. off of Alexander Ave. in Marin County.  Between Sausalito and the GG Bridge.   The road is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation area.  There are no meters (at least there weren't when I last looked.  The area is patrolled by rangers and other law enforcement.  I've parked overnight without issue (tickets or break ins).   Parking there does require a 4-5 mile bike ride up to the bridge and to the start (whether at the south end of the GG Bridge or in Crissy Field).  But you need a warm up anyway.  What another 5 miles if you're doing 400k and trying to go further.  Good luck.

Thank you everyone for the replies. I really appreciate it. Ashok and Rob, this parking lot you mentioned, can you send  a screenshot of where this lot is (uphill from Stone).  Thank you.

Hi everyone
 Regarding Pier 39 Parking
Current rates:  $20 the first 24 hours and $12 for each additional hour.
Have asked its Management to extend special rate to SFR riders.   Please standby.

Hi
I haven’t yet heard from Laz Parking company. Laz is the one that manages the Pier 39 Parking lot. My contact,  Nhien just told me that his supervisors were reviewing my request for special rates. Promised me to have an answer by the end of the day.
Sorry for the delay.

Thanks Mannie,
I wasn't concerned about the rate, I was concerned about being there after midnight and getting a ticket.  but a discounted rate for all day Saturday and into very early Sunday morning would be ideal. I am hopign to be done around midnight

A great move for folks coming from the peninsula!

Do super-confirm weekend first-train-of-the-day times, as the longer SFR brevets (that may have earlier starts) may not be supported by the weekend train schedule.

Greg:
According to my contact,  cars parked past midnight will not be towed, just the rate changes to $12 per each additional hour. Laz Parking Company phone #
415 705 5418.  There is a staffed Exit Kiosk open 24 hours that will handle these special cases.

Good morning all!
I followed up this morning with Laz Parking (Pier 39) regarding special rate for SFR riders. They have not yet made any decision. I think we will not hear from them them in time for our Hopland ride.

Park at your own risk, is my general advice about SF.

I returned from a 300K last year or so, having parked near Crissy Field, and found my entire, mostly new-ish KUAT bike rack cut off the back of my SUV.

Before I get an uninvited lecture from someone here about how to secure something to my vehicle (just dont, please)

YES it was locked to the trailer hitch w/ the factory-issued sort of lock (which is de minimus) as well a deadbolt thing I had welded in there, post-installation.

Professional thieves with all sorts of tools and saws, apparently.

All told, that brevet cost me about $1,000.00. +++

Something to also factor in: If you are a slower rider too, there is less ‘safety in numbers’ to rely on with your car parked with a bunch of other Randos in the same lot.

I’m very selective and careful about which rides I do out of SF anymore, from my own personal experience with the bike rack, and anecdotal car smash and grab stories I’ve heard and read.

I don’t have any ‘where to park’ ideas to share, just my warnings.

I lived in West Philly for five years. Then I moved to the Bay Area and was just shocked how dangerous life is over here.

No longer an option but I started a few of the early morning rides from the SF hostel in the headlands. It was a beautiful ride in the wee hours. Even saw an owl in the row turn his head 180 degrees.

I have also taken the bus from Santa Rosa to the bus stop just pst the bridge but the arm rests made sleeping contorted uncomfortable.

I like Todd’s suggestion to park on the Marin side and ride across the bridge.

An alternative parking alternative on the SF side:

  • South side of Marina Blvd. I photographed the street sign yesterday at 561 Marine Blvd near Divisidero

2 hour parking

8am to 6pm

Monday through Friday

Except Vehicles

With Area M permits

Note there is no parking restriction at weekends. The sign was attached to a street light, something I found useful when getting ready.

I have parked here for several SFR rides starting at the Bridge.

All this seem like good reasons to start more brevets from the Freitas Parkway park and ride like Bill Reenstra did in the ‘90s.

Hi Larry,

In those days most riders on those brevets would drive to the start. These days, we have a large number of riders that ride their bikes to the start in SF. If we started all our rides at the Lucas Valley Park and ride for example, we'd lose at least half our ridership. We still run the Russian River 200k route which is based almost entirely on the 200km route Bill would have run. We never get crowds for that ride like we do for say Pierce Point, Two Rock which start in SF, or DPC which starts at a BART station accessible by SF residents. No BART trains going to Freitas Parkway.
