I'm planning on observing at Henry Coe on Saturday, Feb 7 assuming the current forecast holds.

The observers.org page says to email the ranger at jverh...@parks.ca.gov - can someone confirm that this email is still current?

Yep that's Ranger John's email. You can count on us keeping that list of observing sites updated and accurate. We work on it.

I plan on joining as well.  Will bring my 3d printed binotelescope as well as the SmartEye that arrived today!

I plan to leave around moonrise or earlier.

Great, David. I’m planning on bringing my newly collimated 25x100 binos. It will be fun to compare with your binotelescope.

I emailed the ranger on Thursday (but didn't receive a reply) and just called as well.

Yes, I talked to a volunteer who said she would pass the message along (and noted that the gate is usually left dummy-locked for astronomers)

Sorry, I dont have a good dew prevention setup and the forecast seems to show that dew will be a problem for most of the night. Will join another night. Hope you all have a nice night out observing!

I'm still going to join. I'm hopeful for the forecast (with a strong acknowledgement of uncertainty) and especially hopeful about dew since the Coe lot has historically been bone dry even when the forecast shows 100% humidity.

See ya'll there soon. ETA will be around 5:45

Glad that you all had a nice night!

This is the 2nd time in my experience where the dew forecast for Coe has been misleading. Ill take my chances from next time onwards..

A few Wx sources were basically wrong about the dew at Coe and FP last night.  Only Windy.com and the NWS were correct with Windy the most accurate. I use Windy most often. Astrospheric totally wrong. FP and Coe are micro-climates and have elevation to their benefit staying above the lower level moist air where the Wx source get their info for forecasts. I hemmed and hawed all day about going to FP because of the negative forecasts. Went anyway, really wanted to complete my 125 object open cluster list -- the A.L. Open Cluster list. I set up on a FPOA pad and watched bands of clouds continually pass overhead as late as 8pm.  I was worried about being skunked. But by 8:30pm, the last band of clouds passed by and to the east revealing totally clear skies overhead for me to start observing in Monoceros and Puppis. I did see Canopus culminating a couple of degrees culminating above the S. horizon, it was so clear. The RH stayed below 65%, nice and dry, no wind and 52°F comfortable all night. Seeing was very good, ~1.0 arc-sec. Really glad I went!  You Don't Know Unless You Go!

Peter Natscher, old friend, honestly ...
"You Don't Know Unless You Go!"

How many times have you bailed on account of a forecast! You're the guy with a little shrine to the jet stream in your house.
Will report from the Peak tonight. Glad you had a super night.

Thanks for organizing!  (I was set up next to my high school pal Sean and his 25 inch dob)

Super late on the response but good to meet everyone and thanks for the OI!! Shoutout to David for saving my imaging night! Ended up with 3 images instead of 0 because of his extra data cable that he had.

Quick thoughts from the night, David's 80mm binoscope was super impressive. I feel like I saw more in there than I could from my 8 inch dob and it was much more comfortable with 2 eyes over 1. Sean's 25 inch dob was awesome with a great view of Trapezium and M51 the Whirlpool. I also got to hear Joshua's AZ-EQ5, try out Mitchell's Delos eyepieces, and compare my seestar with Muriel's. Lastly, I shouldn't try to pack my dob if I'm fitting 3 imaging rigs into my car. I was probably pushing how much I could pack in there haha.

Beautiful images, Joel. I was amazed at the amount of gear you hauled out of your car. Being the old man that I am, I remember the days of dual-axis drives powered by D cells, hand guiding, slide film, and a 35mm camera attached to a scope. The amount of gear, batteries, and software needed for modern astro-imaging is ridiculous! 😆

You all were having too much fun at your end of the lot. I heard lots of good laughing. I need to spend a bit more time socializing.

Thanks for sharing your images.

Even later response from me . I had a somewhat frustrating night with my AVX mount and some new gear, was thankful I’d brought my binotelescope so I could view in between bouts of frustration.  I finally just reverted to manual alignment and used my SmartEye like just another eyepiece and got to enjoy it. I’ve since figured out that trying to plate solve with both the SmartEye and the Celestron autoguider corrupted SkySafari and I had to delete and reinstall it.  Appreciate the simplicity of starhopping visually even more after that evening!

Enjoyed the company of all, watching Richard work his way through the Sue French articles, getting views though Sean’s big dob, and visiting the imagers’ party over by Joel.

Moonrise was the highlight of the night for me!

Great Pictures Joel! I am glad to see what your three telescopes were working on.
It is fun to see that for the first picture on the website, the stars disappear when I scroll on it.
And glad to see what IC 447 is supposed to look like, it certainly does not appear half as impressive on my unprocessed 4 min SeeStar picture.
Your picture does really show the blue haze I was told about.

A highlight of the night was Sean's 25". Orion and M51 like I have never seen them before. So many details in M51's arms swirling around. It made my night.
The Leo Triplet looked great in Ted's UC Obsession. I don't remember if it was a 15" or an 18" but I was impressed at how compact it was. His wooden Alt-Az system was interesting too.
And I loved the sharpness of the clusters in David's colorful binoculars. I forgot which one we looked at, M34 maybe?

With my 10", I looked at M1, M33, M38, M44, M74, M78, M97, M100, M105, M106, M108, M109, and IC 447 which I did not see visually.
M1 looked like a grey cloud, most galaxies looked like a faint haze, sometimes with a bright nucleus.
I could see 3 galaxies when looking at M105: M105, NGC 3384, NGC 3389. M105 was the one on the left.

Another night rich in wildlife. But thankfully Mitch was standing between me and the unidentified animal who was walking on branches and breathing heavily in the bushes.
Later in the night I heard a beep beep sound, Merlin identified it as a pygmy owl, pretty exciting!
And to close the night on a high note, I had my cooler in the open trunk while I realized a cute little fox was walking on top of my car.
Unfortunately I got so startled that I scared it off before I realized it would have been nice to take a picture of it.
The wildlife never disappoints at Henry Coe.
