Just to let everyone know, a new major version of Session Buddy will be submitted to the Chrome Web Store tomorrow.

This has been a long time coming and sets the foundation for lots of exciting new developments to come.

Here's some details on the release: https://sessionbuddy.com/v4/

Some things to note:

- If you haven't already done so, now would be a great time to create a backup. Things should go smoothly, but there are a lot of variables involved.

- Lots of things have changed, some big. Most notably, Previous Sessions have been replaced by a History feature. User and support documentation updates are still in progress and I appreciate everyone's patience while we work to get these completed. I didn't want that to hold up the release.

- It's a complete rewrite and a huge release. There will be some quirks to be ironed out no doubt. In addition, some known finer-grained UX items like keyboard shortcuts still need to be re-integrated. Don't freak out. There will be a follow-up release to address any blue tape items.

- The update is designed to automatically open a Session Buddy tab after install. Normally not something I like to do, but in this case it was necessary to get folks upgraded as soon as possible due to impending Chrome deprecations. If you have Session Buddy installed on multiple Chrome profiles, open them up and make sure they update.

- No idea how long the Chrome Web Store review process will take. I'm hoping not too long, but it tends to vary.

Thanks all for your support. I sincerely hope you enjoy the new version.

Cheers,
Hans

Thanx Hans for this meaningful and long-waited-for announcement!

I have a couple of problems:
By clicking Settings > Backup nothing happens.
By clicking Settings > Export (all sessions) the SessionBuddy page crashes when trying to save all sessions in a JSON file. After the crash, the SB icon disappears (and I don't know how to reactivate SB without having to re-open Chrome.
Is there a limit of windows or tabs that can be exported?
Is there a limit of windows or tabs that can be back-upped?
Apart from the Export/Backup functions, what is the maximum number of tabs you consider acceptable and reasonable for SB to work smoothly?

Thanks!

Roberto

Hard to say Roberto. I think the limits are mostly dependent on system resources (which won't be as much of a problem for the new version).

Have you tried giving Backup time to finish before closing the tab? It might take a minute or so in your case.

As a fallback, you can back up the database file itself: https://sessionbuddy.com/data-location/

I plan to make a tool available that will generate an importable file from a database file.

Thank you for the v4 Update, I really like the look and feel so far.

I have some minor suggestions after you are done with the inevitable bugfixing :)
- Can you display the number of tabs in the history cards?
- I would like to be able to delete meaningless snapshots from history
- Would you consider a second button next to "open selected" that allows the selected Links to open in the current windows instead of opening a new one?

Thank you very much for your continued development of this extension!

It looks really nice, especially with the dark theme.

The upgrade seems seamless and nothing appears broken.

I would have liked to see the ability to save tab groups though - it is the one major missing feature that would have been nice to see come along with a new version.

Hi, Hans.

Thank you for the update on Session Buddy's major release and the efforts to innovate and enhance the application. Your dedication to improving user experience is evident and much appreciated.

Following the transition to the new version, I encountered several challenges, notably with the history session's searchability, editing, and sorting functionalities. Understanding the complexity of such a comprehensive rewrite, I acknowledge these might be among the initial quirks you mentioned.

Regrettably, I did not perform a backup prior to the update. Consequently, I am considering a temporary rollback to version 3.6.9 for immediate workflow continuity. However, I am facing compatibility issues with the export files from the new version, rendering them unrecognizable by the older version.

Could you provide guidance or a workaround to address this situation? Ensuring seamless access to previous sessions is crucial for my daily operations, and I believe a solution to this predicament would benefit other users in similar circumstances.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication to the Session Buddy community. I look forward to your advice and the further enhancements your team is preparing.

Warm regards,

few problems
Moving the story to a separate place is a bad idea. This causes the search to not work properly, ignoring tabs in the history. When it comes to the search itself, it's definitely a big step back. The previous method was much more transparent and made it easier to find the desired card in the history and saved tabs.
Is there any way to roll back to the previous version permanently?

Hi,
In the new version, I don't see an option to show the number of tabs (currently being open) on the extension icon. Is that something planned to readd for the future? I found it very useful.
Also with the "Select Duplicates" feature, I only have an option to open/save them, not to close or delete them.

Best Regards,
Hynek

I would like to point out that the update started automatically when I opened Google Chrome.
The problem is that now there is no backup button in the settings menu.
In the history it is not possible to delete the individual page or closed browser window.
Thanks

Hi!
A few points about the new version:
- I was able to delete tabs/windows in the history snapshot before, but don't seem to be able now. Can this be brought back?
- Also, seeing number of tabs/windows in the history snapshots list was crucial to quickly detect the needed sessions after the crash. Please, return this feature, at least as an option.
- Adding custom titles/description to the snapshots would be super helpful.

Thank you!

Ability to delete from History

To echo one of Martin Huber's requests, above,
Can we have the ability to delete snapshots, windows, tabs from the new History view please,
as we do within the new collections
and as we used to be able to do with the old way of presenting history (ie. the old unnamed sessions)

Otherwise, thank you.  An excellent session manager, and V4 looks good

Thank you so much for providing sessionbuddy, even free of charge. ( I did donate last year)
I understand v4 is work in progress, but I share my issues if it is of any help.
Sessionbuddy is a core part of my browsing experience (it's great!), which is now somewhat disrupted with the change in search
The old search design was great, I hope it will be implemented again! It would return sessions instead of tabs, with matched tabs marked and non-matched hidden or optionally shown in grey.
Also I loved searching for 'WebsiteIWantToClose.com' and being able to close them across any session, unnamed or named or current.
currently:
-cannot search within the specific current session, specific collection or specific historical session
-cannot search on collection name
-search only returns tabs from collections, not history. Doesn't show the date.

I hope the history sessions will maintain the same support as the saved sessions, many people do not explicitly save their sessions.

Kind regards

In the previous version there was a feature to show the total tab count of the session on the extension icon in the toolbar.
Was that feature removed?

Hi, thanks for the update, I'd like to ask for bringing back some of the past features:
- displaying the number of tabs/windows in the history snapshots cards;
- the ability to delete tabs and windows from the history snapshots, as it was before the update;
- make the window titles be more to the left then the tabs they contain (that way you could conveniently discern the tabs and the window as a container for the tabs).

Thanks!

As a long time user that's been anxiously awaiting this release, I say thanks and congratulations for getting it across the finish line!

I also donated on release day as a token of my appreciation. :)

I'm still learning my way around the changes and new features. First, although it's strictly aesthetic as opposed to functional, I love that the dark theme now matches the rest of my system.

So far the only thing that I greatly miss is the tab counter on the extension icon, but I see it's coming back in 4.0.2, so that's a relief. I haven't had a chance yet to test a restore of hundreds of tabs -- that was always my biggest gripe with v3, as it takes my browser (and computer) to its knees for sometimes several minutes, as opposed to the native tab restore feature built into Chrome and Edge, which restores them all basically instantly and then defers or lazy loads the content as tabs are hovered over or opened. If that improvement is there, or will be, then I'll be quite pleased with the new version. Some of the other features people are griping about are things I seldom if ever used, so are not a big concern for me.

The problem is that now there is no backup button in the settings menu.

It appears that Settings --> Export  now serves as the backup feature.  It goes directly to saving as a JSON file, with all collections by default, but can opt for just the selected one.  Presumably, the old Export functionality is now covered by the new select/copy/paste stuff.

Ah, yup, that's it.  I now see that Settings --> Other --> Extra copy formats  actually adds individual menu items, for each additional format, in the copy/paste section of the main menu.  Very nice!!

I have a major issue with restoring folders of incognito tabs. Only 2 or 3 of the tabs end up in an incognito window and the rest are opened in a random normal tab instead. Didn't make a difference if I tried to open the folder of tabs all at once or the tabs one by one
Since you cannot drag tabs between normal and incognito windows the only way I could restore my inconito tabs was to manually copy and paste each url individually into new tabs

Hi Jenna,

I'm not able to repro this so far.

Are the links you're opening in a collection or in history? How are you opening them? right-click menu? header button? header menu? double-click title? single-click URL?

You can respond directly to sup...@sessionbuddy.com if you'd like.

Thanks,

CBM, please keep in mind that even if you restore v3, all your data might be lost in the upcoming Chrome update, since it will not support older extension and database format in the nearest feature.

Also, quick closing will be fixed soon in v4.0.2 extension update: https://sessionbuddy.com/v4-faq/ Search will be adjusted too.
And duplicate removal was mentioned in v4 announce https://sessionbuddy.com/v4/, you can select them via the 3-dot menu.

And tab groups feature support was already mentioned in the v4 announcement.

"Overwrite with current" will be restored in v4.0.2 (as "Replace with open tabs").

Same with one-click close/delete.

So what you saying is the only solution in order to keep using v3 is to stay on Chrome version 123 :(

Also I have been getting a lot of these errors, is this something to worry about or can I just ignore these? I didn't download any shady CRX file or anything, just copy pasted this folder to Extensions "C:\Users\mnoor\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome Dev\User Data\Default\Extensions\edacconmaakjimmfgnblocblbcdcpbko" and then loaded the unpacked extension and copied over database file to restore.

Yea, but that's also not really advisable IMO.

The third-party cookie warnings are a side-effect of favicon requests, I believe. SB doesn't rely on cookies itself.

just want to say I really appreciate how stable the new version is, while some minor features have been removed or changed that I do notice, I can live with them as long as the main extension is more secure now, especially on alternate browsers like Yandex which has plagued me for years at this point, and and shedding some small tears of joy knowing it's finally fixed and stable

Just to let everyone know, a new major version of Session Buddy will be submitted to the Chrome Web Store tomorrow.

This has been a long time coming and sets the foundation for lots of exciting new developments to come.

Here's some details on the release: https://sessionbuddy.com/v4/

Agreed. Lots of room for improvement there and much of this will be addressed in forthcoming efforts.

v3 exports are compatible with v4 but not the other way around.

This is a risky move anyway. SB will soon stop working even in older versions of Chrome due to Chrome deprecations (namely, WebSQL Database and Manifest v2). You may lose data.

If you can wait, we're focused on getting History search and deletion done asap and will cut the next release as soon as that work is complete.

This feature has been restored in v4.0.2. Make sure your Session Buddy version is up-to-date.

See the release notes: https://sessionbuddy.com/release-4-0-2/

Hit the Delete key to close or delete selected items or right-click the selection and click Delete

In the new version, I don't see an option to show the number of tabs (currently being open) on the extension icon. Is that something planned to readd for the future? I found it very useful.
Also with the "Select Duplicates" feature, I only have an option to open/save them, not to close or delete them.

Have you tried giving Backup time to finish before closing the tab? It might take a minute or so in your case.

As a fallback, you can back up the database file itself: https://sessionbuddy.com/data-location/

I plan to make a tool available that will generate an importable file from a database file.

Is there a limit of windows or tabs that can be exported?

Apart from the Export/Backup functions, what is the maximum number of tabs you consider acceptable and reasonable for SB to work smoothly?

HI Hans Thanks for your reply.
I have not been able to backup SB before the v4 automatic update.

> I think the limits are mostly dependent on system resources (which won't be as much of a problem for the new version).
I think my system resources are more than enough since I use AutoCAD with contemporary 5/6 enormous 3d files without problems.

> Have you tried giving Backup time to finish before closing the tab? It might take a minute or so in your case.
Yes, I have. Just nothing happened after more than one hour

> As a fallback, you can back up the database file itself: https://sessionbuddy.com/data-location/
I did. I just copied the database file(s)  to my desktop.  file.MD, file.CSV, file.TXT, file.JSON neither of which I know how to edit. I thought i'd have to use them sometimes after update to v4.
But the excellent news was that after the automated update to v4 I found all my sessions in the History! 🏆
Probably I didn't lose anything, I hope. Time will tell.

> I plan to make a tool available that will generate an importable file from a database file.
I hope this tool will be incorporated within SB and will automatically invite me to restore/import whenever any update takes place.
It will be extremely useful for those like me who use SB without knowledge of how it works behind the UI.

Thanks again!

Wish I had realized that this was coming. I don't exactly check here often and I would have liked to create a backup file before the v4 update so that I could use the previous version until the new one is brought up to parity.

The FAQ mentioned that the intentionally omitted features may be re-added based on user demand. I feel like them needing to be put into the FAQ to begin with means that enough people are asking about it for it to be re-added, but just to add my own voice, I am very much missing:

Tabs counter on the icon
Prompt to name a session (In what situation would anyone want to save a session named "untitled"?)
If hitting the delete key to close a tab is added then that could be better, but I definitely miss the close buttons. I never had problems closing them one at a time, but I've had browser crashes when trying to close a large number of tabs at once.
Also having to double click to go to a tab instead of single click is quite annoying, maybe have that either be configurable, or have the icon be clicked for adding to a selection and the tab name be clicked to go to the tab?

Hi!Thank you for your work on this extension, it's very useful! However, I must say that I've joined this group because from the user perspective I don't think the recent changes are helpful. Most importantly, the new History tab makes snapshots every 1h or so, when previously it was saving only on crash/exit, and we cannot search through these sessions any more... This means that there are hundreds of sessions stored and it's very hard to find important things among them. I'm sure there is a good reason for these changes, but as of now, Session Buddy is simply significantly less useful than it used to be.

Awesome. A tremendous amount of time and effort went into making sure the data migration from WebSQL (deprecated DB technology) to IndexedDB (modern standard) was solid.

> hope this tool will be incorporated within SB

That won't be necessary since it's really just a single-use utility for those who miss the upgrade window or for whom the migration got interrupted (unfortunately we can't control for all factors; some failures across 1m users are inevitable, but overall the auto-migration was a huge success).

If we select this option, would the SB behavior be exactly the same as before the update, that is SB would save sessions in History on window closure and browser crash?

Hello

Thank you very much for creating this extension. It has been very helpful for the past almost 5 years and I am using it everyday. I greatly appreciate your work and I really mean it.
However, as you can tell with the many complaints here, I have some requests to return these features back. All of these features existed in the previous version.

🔹 Please return the ability to search tabs by title. It was possible before the update but its no longer possible.

For example, if the tab had the title "v4.0.2 RELEASE NOTES", I would've been able to search it by just typing "release" in the search bar but its no longer possible.

🔹 Renaming collections should not update the date of the collection and bring it up. It wasn't like this in the previous version, now it updates the date and brings the collection on the very top

🔹 Please return & increase the time of 'redo' option popping up after i delete a collection, in case i accidentally delete it. This has been causing some troubles for me.

🔹 Please enable deleting history by choice. I know you added the option to delete snapshots only but I would like to have it so i can select individually. Again, this was possible in the previous version

🔹Please show the number of tabs under the collection title.

🔹When i merge two collections, please make it so that it merges duplicate tabs automatically

Again, I really appreciate your work. It is just frustrating that some these VERY useful features are gone.

I will 2nd Anton Sh.'s message & agree that hopefully these features should be brought back:
The previous version used to show how many tabs each session had
The ability to delete tabs & windows from saved sessions (saved by the user) & previous sessions

I'd also like to add, if possible, bring back the session name into the Chrome tab.
For instance, I had some common sessions I go back & forth between depending on things, & in the previous version, I just opened each session in their own individual tab & in turn that tab was named/ titled whatever I named that session when I saved it. I believe each session also had their own unique "URL".
The new version, while it does look good, just names the tab "Session Buddy" & doesn't change when switching between saved sessions (or Collections as they're called now)

Not sure if this is the right method for feedback but this latest update seems worse in terms of UI/user experience.

- Previous version where tabs were grouped by date made it much easier to scan instead just all under one bucket of 'collections'

- Previous version allowed single click to open web link vs double click in latest versikon

- Previous version delete 'x' made it very easy to quickly remove links from a group already visited vs now must right click to invoke menu move mouse to delete, click again -- very cumbersome

Perhaps take survey of most common use cases/tasks people do before making drastic changes

I came to request a couple of features that I'm missing a lot from v3 (close tabs in one click, pop-up to name session immediately when saving, some search things), but I see they're already in the FAQ as coming in a future update (is there any way to pin the message linking to the FAQ to the top of the discussion group?). While missing these isn't fun for now, I was disappointed to see how negative a few reactions to the v4 update were. Session buddy has been a great help for me for years, and I appreciate the significant work that went into the v4 rewrite so we can continue using it!

The third-party cookie warnings are a side-effect of favicon requests, I believe. SB doesn't rely on cookies itself.

Yep. This will not be the case for Stable and probably not for dev/canary versions for much longer.

Cheers,
Hans

congratulations for the update.

what I'm missing:
- export to different formats than json: html, xls,...
- selection for export (active session, all sessions, including history)
- history deletion, but that's already adressed for 4.02

thank you!

Window scrolling - the slim scroll bar on the right side of the SBv3 window is either gone, ot it's become so skinny and/or colored such that it vanished. I am using Dark mode, btw.

"Overwrite with current" will be restored in v4.0.2 (as "Replace with open tabs").

Same with one-click close/delete.

Please refer to the FAQ for more details: https://sessionbuddy.com/v4-faq/

Can the 'Overwrite' feature be re-introduced? I used it frequently to update saved tab folders, but it seems I now have to make a new folder and delete the old one each time. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Some of the other features people are griping about are things I seldom if ever used, so are not a big concern for me.

yeah, the slim scroll bar on the right side is no longer there. to add on top of that sessions don't load all at once like they used to in v3 which makes it super hard to navigate a long list of sessions, each time i have to scroll down to get to the bottom manually whereas before i could just instantly scroll to bottom using the slim scroll bar on the right.

I'm not sure if this is the right place for it but I tried to make a thread about it and it wasn't posted. How do I search history instead of collections? I don't use collections and but right now it seems like only collections can be searched. I do get the highlight on the history tabs when I open a specific one but there's no other search done.

Hello. I maybe a little confused with this new version, but I found out that there is a way to find duplicates and delete them in the 3 dots section by pressing select duplicates. This is the one I am using now. But it does not hide the duplicates once you merge 2 different collections on its own it seems. Also an "UNDO" ability to go back to something is very useful and I miss it very much, since you are prone to mistakes especially once you try the new things.  Thank you for answering!

Has your Session Buddy perhaps already been updated to v4?  The web page you mentioned only applies to v3.  In v4, backup functionality is provided by Export, which by default saves all collections in a single JSON file.

That sort of "export" is now provided by the (multi-)select and Copy to clipboard, after having enabling particular formats in Settings --> Other --> Extra copy formats, which adds corresponding Copy as... menu items.  From there you can paste from clipboard into a file or whatever.

- selection for export (active session, all sessions, including history)
As far as I know, the only selection mechanism for Copy as mentioned above, is by mouse: click for single; click and ctrl/cmd-click for multiple; and shift-click for a range.
If you click on a particular history entry, you can Copy that collection, but there doesn't appear to be a multi-select ability within the history list.

Indeed, it's practically impossible to scroll through long lists of saved sessions. I've reported this here: https://groups.google.com/g/sessionbuddy-discuss/c/spKi_Pt7ixY/m/7CUwfaBMAAAJ

Hopefully this gets fixed ASAP because this change made the extension utterly unusable for me.

Renaming a session changes its date? You can't be serious! This is a totally unwarranted change in behavior and completely breaks one of my workflows. Please revert this change.

Just want to say I am really happy to see active development and things happening!

And one question - is there a version history / changelog somewhere?

Used to be able to Keep open multiple SB Tabs & Directly Reference Sessions/ Folders using its then used URL Link? Fixable?

I'd use this as a way to have a MASTER REFERENCE Session where other Sessions could be ReOpened or Compacted - directions that I'd like to address later but stay within my MASTER CONTEXT as a Reminder.

This seems to have broken? Any way for this to be restored? Fixed?
