Hello,
What is the current status of the project?
Maturity, deployment, uptodate Android versions support, real life test cases etc.

If it is not actively developed, then why not?

I am a volunteer in a first responding medical organization. In some cases we need to go into an area without cellular coverage, so an ad-hoc network can be interesting (we do not have walkie-talkies )

cheers!

My opinion only.

Serval works on very old Android versions and is fairly basic.  Since it was first written Android has evolved and added better peer to peer options such as wifi direct.  So it depends on your basic equipment which version of android are you using etc.

Have a look at Bridgefy and see if it fits your needs.  A larger user group and it does apparently do mesh networking.

On a more technical level this depends on your end users expertise and support Commotion gives you an off net internet if that makes sense but you will need to plug in servers for phone calls, Astrix on a raspberry pi?  an email server and add a Raspberry pi with as SSD to give you shared file space (Network attached storage).  Think in terms of a couple of laptops to run it then at least a couple of routers for things to connect to it.

So step one is define your requirements and existing equipment.  If it's very old android running version 4 then Serval is practically the only option.  Funding is intermittent so support might not be the strongest point.

Briar is also worth a look.  Open source runs on Android but has the ability to store messages to send when a connection is available.

There used to be something called fidonet which ran on modems and had the advantage that different severs would "pack" the messages using zip or 7zip etc then connect transfer and unpack them reducing the amount of network capacity required.  Typically it was done between midnight and 1 am when traffic was light.  These message packs could be posted by physical mail and then unpacked.  Briar can be configured to do something similar.  It is evolving.  It would need some looking at to sort out how best to use it.
