A new version of TSE is now available:
For Windows:
https://semware.com/files/tse-pro-install/tse-setup-4.49e.zip
For Linux:
https://semware.com/files/tse-pro-install/tse-linux-4.49f.tgz

EditFile(" ") - loaded a file with garbage in the name.
It should produce a picklist. Fixed. Thanks to Knud Van Eeden for the report.

Linux version did not correctly load files as expected, if a wild
card was used, and it matched both files and directories.
Thanks to Fred Holmes for the report.

Templates were being expanded even when not found for the current
file extension. Fixed. Added template expansion on/off to the
menu. Thanks to Knud van Eeden for the report and suggestion.

File Manager macro: allow to view <unnamed-nnn> buffers.
ListFile() did not always allow viewing unloaded files.

Sammy, your link for tse for windows goes to  tse-setup-4.49e.zip instead of  tse-setup-4.49f.zip

Both TSE 4.49f downloads can now be found here too:

https://ecarlo.nl/tse

The Windows version has a correct link to 4.49f, and contains the setup_as_user.cmd and setup_as_administrator.cmd files that Semware's version does not provide.

Sammy,

Also the "Template Expansion" (on/off) can be found in the "Options" menu as well as in the sub menu Options, Iconfig and then Text Entry/Block Options.

Installing 4,49f was challenging. I opened an Administor level cmd window and unzipped into a temporary folder. But running Setup.exe or Tse.exe kept giving me errors. The problem was that Norton Internet anti-virus kept deleting both the exe and data files and its popup warning did not tell me what it was doing. Carlo, why were these files renamed? I finally found that it was "quarantining" the files and persuaded Norton to restore them. Perhaps the .cmd batch files should check for the existence of the two files before attempting to run them.

I have my own UI files developed years ago. I install the new TSE then examine the changes since the previous version and study the read me files and incorporate the changes, trying to keep up to date. I have been finding that the anti-virus programs (formerly Kaspersky, now Norton) will sometimes object to sc32.exe "burning in" the changes. I used to configure my programs simularly way back many years to my Dos programming days, thanks to Turbo Power software.

Waiting for years for a new Tse, I moved on to Visual Studio Code for my serious Windows programming work. But I still use Tse every day for certain small tasks. As an amateur musician I developed Tse macros to transpose lyric and chord charts and chord pro files. I haven't figured out how to program VS Code to perform that job.

So thanks Sammy and Carlo and Knud and the team for the welcome updates!
Steve

Steven,

Another user reported the same problem with Norton, and I can confirm it too.

> The problem was that Norton Internet anti-virus kept deleting both the exe and data files

I have Norton too, and almost always have to deal with this. ☹
My Norton gives me two pop-ups: one for tse.exe and one for tse.dat.
In each pop-up I select both these choices:
"Details":
After a long wait this tells me it quarantined TSE based on "WS-Reputation", meaning "possibly suspicious behaviour", and not because of a specific virus.
"Recover" (*):
This takes the file out of quarantine, undeleting it.
I must do these actions each time I install a new TSE version.

(*)
I do not have an English Norton version, so I am guessing at the English word Norton uses here.

> Carlo, why were these files renamed?

For the .exe this mainly has a Windows cause.
Windows runs an executable with "setup" as a name automatically with "administrator" permissions.
So to install TSE with administrator permissions, an easy solution is to rename its executable.
A side reason is that the TSE installation relies on this rename too to offer its extra "administrator" installation options.
The tse.dat file no longer must be renamed.

I like this idea.

Thank you, Carlo. for the information. I am not certain how to use Norton, since I have used Kapersky anti-virus for years, but I changed to Norton because of Russian software concerns. Perhaps these  anti-virus tips could be listed in a Readme text file. I did not know about the Setup.exe administrator handling, and this knowledge will save me time with software installation.

Advised is that one or more users (Semware, ...) with these false-positive issues report it (also) to Norton, so that it can be
adressed assumed maybe once and for all:

I understand the suggestion, but no, I am not going to support what I have no control over (virus scanners).

> I did not know about the Setup.exe administrator handling, and this knowledge will save me time with software installation.

In that case, for your information, Windows actually runs any executable name that has "setup" in its name with administrator privileges, so you have some naming wiggle-room.

For the TSE users in general:

As this seems a general problem, happening at more than one user, happening (repeatedly) with different (new(er)) versions of TSE, advised is the following in general:

If you have such experience of impact of the anti-virus software of TSE:

1. BEFORE the installation of a (new) TSE version FIRST ALWAYS add the (whole) TSE folder to the 'exclusion folders' of the anti-virus software (Norton, McAfee, ...). That adding to the exclusion folder should always be possible. So always start with that first.

2. Additionally optionally inform the 'false-positive' support of that anti-virus software vendor. Search e.g. Google for that where and what to do. Typically they will ask you to attach / send (all) the (.exe) files which have the problem as an attachment. After investigation it will then e.g. be fixed in a latest next upgrade / update of the anti-virus software.

3. The creator of the .exe (e.g. Semware, ...) could additionally also contact that vendor, to get the .exe un-listed and or to get e.g. additional optionally advice about how to compile the .exe in order to avoid such false-positives.

with friendly greetings
Knud van Eeden

I added a general warning for anti-virus programs in the pre-installation's readme.txt file.
This is backwards, of course, but also our TSE reality.

Done.

Both changes are now in the tse-setup-4.49f.zip file at
https://eCarlo.nl/tse/index.html#windows_tse_download
and will be in future versions.
