Sector community (cross-posted to the members list also)-

As a reminder, you can help support Sector67 with your holiday season shopping by visiting https://www.sector67.org/blog/supporters/ and clicking on the "Amazon affiliate link". Amazon affiliate program rules require the link to be clicked from a web site, so I am not sharing it directly in this email. We're definitely not endorsing holiday shopping via Amazon (come to the shop and create something unique!), but if you are shopping at Amazon, affiliate money would otherwise go directly to Amazon or to another affiliate.

Some background:
  • Ever since Amazon shuttered the Amazon Smile philanthropic program in 2023, Sector67 has been registered as an Amazon Affiliate.
  • By clicking our Amazon affiliate link a portion of your purchase will go to Sector67. How much we get depends on what is purchased.
  • 2025 was an interesting year for Amazon affiliate links, with reports coming out that Honey, a PayPal-owned browser extension was allegedly skimming affiliate revenue from creators.

Happy holidays!

Hey Scott (et al),

There's no feedback in Amazon about what's going on or if things get attributed to Sector after the initial page loads (as far as I can tell). If I follow that link into Amazon, does any purchase I make during that session get counted (in whatever way a particular item does)? What about opening links into new tabs? It'd be nice to know it gets tracked back to Sector.

It's totally opaque, but clicking that link and buying things generally yields returns on our end:

I believe it has to be from the link on the supporters page, I can generate embed links but I believe they have to be clicked from our site as well but it's not entirely clear.  There's probably more guidance somewhere, the program is called Amazon Affiliates.  The returns are much better than the Giving Program they had previously.

Thanks for trying!

I have tried to find a way to decode what actual affiliate I am supporting at Amazon and I have not found a way to do that apart from the initial affiliate link. From the lack of support within Amazon tools or third party browser extensions, my current belief is that Amazon intends for this information to be hidden. That said, I believe that if you click the affiliate link from our website, Sector67 should receive revenue from purchases for at least some time after, new tabs included.

That said, I have no way to validate that directly either.

Interesting. Thanks, Chris and Scott. Presumably, my shopping after getting sick from my students in December are a few of those pennies. You don't get anything for clicks through, just purchases, right?

Typing S in my browser now autocompletes to the Sector supporters page, so then clicking through the affiliate link there is only one more step from my previous S autocomplete to smile.amazon. : )

What a weird world we live in now. I had a friend's 2025 punk album on repeat (even when I wasn't in the room) enough that it got my top album for the year on Google music with what seems like a huge number of hours of play, but he made nearly nothing off it. Not that he put out the album for income, more cathartic noise in these tough days.

Thanks,
-Eric
