Computer speaker troubleshooting

Hello hivemind,

My 20+ year-old Bose computer speakers stopped playing. I tested them on my laptop as well as my desktop. The problem is identical regardless of the audio source. I also swapped out the audio cables, but the problem appears to be with the speakers themselves. (However, when I plug headphones into the jack on the main speaker, it works perfectly.)

Oddly enough, with the speaker powered on, (but no audio cables connected), a weird clicking sound happens intermittently. There's a 5-second video of the noise, along with front and back photos in this album:

I also checked all the tips on the Bose support website with no success.

Any troubleshooting tips before I take the speakers to Goodwill for recycling? Thanks for being such a helpful group.

If you're willing to wait until August 1st this is the perfect type of thing to bring to the free Sector67/Madison tool library noon-4 at Sector. You'd work with a volunteer repairer to dig in and see if a repair is possible.

Howdy Jon!

Well, you must have made it very happy!  It is purring!

Then again, it does sound like gun shots in the distance.

It could be planning your demise.

Yet again, it could be that it is just dreaming about Call of Duty.

Seriously, it is likely a failed component between the input port and the output of the amplifier (which doesn't really narrow it down much at all).  It will likely require replacement of a single component.  The only issue will be whether it is a common off the shelf component or a proprietary, hard to find integrated circuit.
