Finally getting a H88/H89: looking for list of tantalum caps

It has been a long time since I sold off the last of my H-89s and, due to the kindness of a SEBHC member, I have purchased a 'new to me' H-88 (upgraded to a H-89, I believe).  Huzzah!!! Not in my hands yet (pending a road trip up to Nebraska after the holidays) but laying in plans for future work on the new computer.

One of those plans is to go through it and replace ALL the tantalum caps with new electrolytics. To that end, it would be very handy if someone had a list of the tantalum caps on the H-89s CPU board and the terminal board (quantities, values and voltages). Would make ordering supplies soooooo much easier. 

I know I started a list like that back in the 2000's but can find no record of it.  And I can certainly dig up information (i.e. download manuals et al) and will be doing so anyways but thought I would try a posting first to see if anyone else has already done that and is willing to share. 

Thanks all and I am really looking forward to getting my 'new to me' H-88.  Even have a space for it down in the workshop.  Well, after I clear off some Heathkit HP-1144's power supplies of the bench!!

For those subsystems, yes.  The H89 processor board wasn’t mentioned at the time.  Then there are any daughterboards included in the configuration.  But this list will at least get those core subsystems covered, including electrolytics in the video if you are so inclined :->.

I'm not a fan of blanket replacing capacitor. I know they pop every now and then but they rarely cause serious damage if caught before they burn the board or other components. I used to do new board test years ago and found new tantalum capacitors to be a high new failure as well. Not as high as these older ones but still not something like the robust carbon film resistors.

Tantalums in timiing circuits I might consider replace but for rail filters, I'd rather let them bow.

Old electrolytic are another thing. Unless carefully restored, they are a problem.

The other reason is, that although I consider my self to be an excellent PC board repairer, the chance of creating a problem of a broken trace is worth replacing a part that you don't even know is bad.

I have board with tantalum capacitors made in 1969 that haven't failed!

Gery, your spreadsheet is a great help and it is in a spreadsheet format!!  Win-win.  At least it covers the Terminal Board.  Dwight's comments about '..not replacing the tantalum's until they blow...' certainly has some relevance and I may very well adopt that stance. But only for the tantalum's!  The electrolytic's, particularly in the power supply, will be replaced pretty quickly. 

After some thought, I realized there is (as far as I know) no Heathkit BOM for the Terminal Logic PCB (but that is covered by Gery's H19 BOM ) or the Logic PCB and those will need to be extracted from the schematic. I'll use Gery's spreadsheet as a core - probably only include the tantalums.

I won't have the 'new' H-88 until late January so I have time to plan. The H-88 is said to be working so I will concentrate first on finding what I have in the way of software and manuals and then concentrate on adding some form of alternate memory/storage using some of the great work done by this group.

Bob,

I am not buying or selling... an exploding tantalum is what started my refurb in April 2020.  Everything worked great for 40 years prior to that.

At the time I just decided to replace what I could hoping everything will last another 40 years.  I did discover the 2 electrolytic caps on the H8 backplane were very puffy so I am happy with my approach.  (different supply voltage than the tantalum was on)

Some disclaimers:

I have a H19A.  I did get some feedback from the group that I had some of the cap values/IDs wrong.  Indeed they were correct for my H19A which seems to have had some revisions on the power supply and video boards.

You will also notice my spreadsheet includes some cap dimensions on it.  The new fangled electrolytic caps are a lot smaller in size than in the old days.  I replaced the electrolytic caps with higher voltage rating caps to more closely match the size of the caps they were replacing.
