I’m taking tomorrow my PAM-37 original listing to be scanned to add to my website along with the manual. Once I do this, who can help to convert the pdf file to text, so that we have the original file in text?

Here is a sample and attaching PDF file.

Thanks,

I'll be happy to clean up the source code I posted years ago, adding the
commented parts that I could not figure out on my own: primarily H67 and
H47 boot & I/O routines.

Yes, that OCR looks like a good starting point - won't require a huge amount of cleanup and is better than manually entering.

BTW, it would be better (for me at least) as plain text. I don't know any assembler that takes MSWord as input! ;-) My plan would be to get this into a form that it can be assembled (proven "correct"), and use it as a starting point for changes and cloning.

It will be exported to plain text but will need to know which parameters you will need.

I can convert a Word doc to plain text, but I believe the OCR software produces plain text, not MSWord, so it would be better to just never put it into Word in the first place. That avoids any possible "corruption" by the whole process.

It just feels "unclean" to have MSWord touch it ;-)

I’m in OfficeMax and they are very busy and wanted to keep the listing. I said no as it is the only copy. I have an old 11x17” scanner in the closet since I moved to Portland. I will give it a try to do it myself for now. 😳

While getting my large scanner out of the closet to scan the PAM-37 listing,  I found the “C” compiler I bought in 2016 for the 8051 microcontroller. The intend was to move the Z67-IDE+ code to “C” to deal easily with the math equations as in assembly language is very difficult. I thought it was lost during my move to Portland. I just installed into my laptop, inserted the license, and it upgraded to latest version. WOW!

This is my winter project!

Ken,

I got my old scanner working again and I did a sample scan. See if you can read it without any issues before I put the time and energy to scan the remainder pages.

File is attached and let me know if I have to change resolution.

My time is greatly limited at the moment.  I can quickly convert from PDF to Word format with my OCR software.  It only requires a cut and paste into a text editor to make it plain text.

Might be worth mentioning here...   MOST scanner utilities allow a choice of output formats and while PDF is usually the goal as the final product, it makes OCR processing somewhat arduous.   Generally, if you need an OCR step in the process, most archivists would suggest 60DPI multi-page TIFF files as the intermediate step.  Files are initially larger but the OCR product has far fewer errors.

That would be 600DPI of course. 400DPI is a practical minimum. It's
imperative to use a lossless compression algorithm for the page images
within the PDF file, if compression is to be used at all. Avoid JPEG at
all costs, at any stage of the workflow. TIFF, being an image container
format rather than just an image format, is perfect for the page images
within the PDF. Group 4 Fax compression (within the TIFF file) works
very well for this and is universally supported. All professional
scanning software will output to this format, while consumer stuff may
or may not.

When running the OCR, it's important to add the resultant text as a
text layer in the PDF, lying beneath the page images. This allows for
re-OCRing in the future, as OCR technology improves, and makes for less
troublesome reading by humans.

Not sure I understand this, you should be able to just do a SaveAs in Word and save it as type Text. No need to cut and paste.

oops...  ya  600DPI  (not enough coffee yet   although, on at least one
occasion, I've done the same typo with the scanner setting.  Results
were predictably useless and forced a redo of several hours work)

Let me scan in PDF for now to see how big the file will be. Then we can TIFF later.

This is what my old scanner "11"x17" can do:

My 11”x17” scanner failed, so I was not able to complete this work.

However I have my regular 8”x11” scanner and I scanned 5 pages with the following settings and it produces 21.6 MB of data per page. For this 5 pages the total file size is 108MB.

Graphical user interface, application

Description automatically generated

I decided to use PDF with 300 DPI and black and white. It gives me about 1.2MB per page.

All,

I completed the PAM-37 Panel Monitor listing. This took over 2 hrs. to do, but now the original listing is available.

Les,

I would suggest to make a copy and put in in your website as well.

Have fun,

Circling back around. Norby, I added the listing to the website. I also created a Wiki page for all of the ROM listings which is here:

So now there's a one-stop shop for all the listings. I'll do the same for the ROM dumps as well.

Also, thanks for scanning this. It looks like it'll be very useful for my soft sector imaging project.

All,

I completed the PAM-37 Panel Monitor listing. This took over 2 hrs. to do, but now the original listing is available.

Les,

I would suggest to make a copy and put in in your website as well.

Have fun,

Norberto
