Greetings All,

I finally broke down and purchased a TL866II+ Programmer.  Much to my surprise, it will also perform logic tests on many 74XXX and 4000 series logic devices, SRAMs, etc.

I'm aware that you can manually add devices to test / program and am wondering if anyone in the group has added the small ROMs such as the 82S23/SN74S188 used in a variety of Heathkit computer products?  Thanks!

Regards,
Joe Travis n6ypc

Can it identify an unknown chip?

Sorry, any TL866 programmer devices are a piece of JUNK. I gave many users to avoid it, but they were stubborn and tried the programmers that did not work well. The programmers ruined many of my components and gave out false information. I threw it away a long time ago. Currently, I use professional devices from Logical Devices and BP Microsystems. They are working flawlessly and always gave me beautiful results and accuracy. AVOID CHINESE-MADE DEVICES!!!

It will never program TTL PROM's, they require programming voltages on the data lines. EPROMs, NAND etc use 5v on the data lines and VPP on only one pin which can be left on for extended periods.

Correct! Here are the programming steps for the 74S188 IC.

Step−by−Step NTE74S188 Schottky PROM Programming Procedure: 1. Apply steady−state supply voltage (VCC = 5V) and address the word to be programmed. 2. Verify that the bit location needs to be programmed. If not, proceed to the next bit. 3. If the bit requires programming, disable the outputs by applying a high−logic−level voltage

Thanks everyone for your response.

Steve Shumaker - I have not seen anything that leads me to believe it will identify an unknown IC.
Steven Feinsmith - I'm sorry for your grief, thanks for sharing.
Randy and Norberto - Thank you for providing the answer(s) I was looking for.

Despite not being able to program these PROMs, I believe the TL866II+ is still capable of reading and verifying them.  I'll attempt to manually enter the necessary information to perform those functions for the various Heathkit PROMs.

Joe Travis n6ypc

I still have my old programmer (Data I/O) to flash the 82S23/74S188 for the H89 system. Let me know if help is needed.

Thanks Norberto.  I'm trying to save the PROM images for the 3 used in the H9 (and others) to have a way to test / verify them.

I've already done that for the H9. Well, I've not "saved" them, but
I've entered them from the documentation. They're attached to this email.

I might still have some blank 82S23 PROM if copies are needed. Are all H9 PROMS the same type; 82S23???

Yes. The original parts are 7488s, but the 82S23 will work.

It looks like jameco still has the 7488’s but they are on clearance.  I have two H-9’s and I’m wondering if I should grab a few while they are available…. Thoughts?

I would, if they'll guarantee that they're blank.

I can program them for you if/when needed, and it sounds like
Norberto can as well.

Steve Shumaker (All) - I discovered the TL866II+ will in fact identify unknown ICs!  Your question prompted me to research it further.  I watched a YT video on this programmer and found you can use the "Auto Find" button to do just that.  I've gone through a variety of 74 series ICs (about a dozen) and it has got everyone correct.  Thanks!

Dave,

I just checked PROM 444-10 and you have one byte off; you have 0x02 and should be 0x12. Details attached.

That byte is very clearly 0x02 in the manual that I have, the H9
Operation manual, 595-2017-03.

As Mark said, there may have been revisions to the manuals. I
suppose it's possible that there were also revisions to the PROMs' contents.

With these PROMs dying left and right, I think we need to figure out
exactly what the situation is here.
