I think the next wiki entry we need is one that explains how we/others can add to the wiki! I’d be happy to contribute
As for UCSD P-System. I’ve put a fair amount of time/effort into that. I still hope to be able to get that working with hard disk (Z67-IDE+).
Heath marketed two versions. The first was version II, which was a commercial packaging of the work done at UCSD. This was distributed on hard sectored floppys. From the spring ’81 catalog:
Later this was replaced with version IV which was a commercial product from a company called SofTech. This was on soft sectored disks and only supported on the ’89. I can only find a reference to it in the 1984 catalog:
By which time it was way too late to the party (and way too expensive!). note the requirement for dual 96TPI drives just to have a usable system!
We have copies of both sets of media and I can help with that if you need me to. I actually have all the doc’s for the version IV release as well.
If I can get this working on the H8/H89 with a hard disk my best bet will be to either use Version II (the source for which has been released by UCSD, but not the low level adaptation for the H8/89) or us the “adaptable” version IV, which uses the CPM BIOS for the low level hardware access. This obviously wasn’t that popular back in the day because it required buying licenses for two OSes!

Pretty sure they never built in any support for the 67. This was purely a floppy-based implementation as far as I can tell from the documentation and software. We would have to figure out how to add that.

Version II was pretty much worthless as it only worked on dual-floppy H17, and most of that was taken up by the OS!. I don’t think it was smart enough to know about double-sided disks or about SY2:. I think a lot of people probably felt gypped after laying out the $300. The file system structure is also very dumb. only accesses files as sequential linear sectors on the disk, so you have to frequently run the “crunch” utility to ensure enough clear space.
Version IV was usable if you have a beefy enough system.
