terminal strip for USB daughterboard - error in BOM?

I’ve discovered a small problem with the Bill Of Materials while building out my daughterboard.  It has to do with the precision machined terminal strips for the board.  I didn’t discover this before because someone (Norberto?) provided me with a set for my first board, but now I’m building out the USB version so I ordered new ones.

I ordered per the BOM v05 on Norberto’s site, which spec’s Mouser part TS-120-G-A-2 but if you look at the Samtec datasheet for that (which I unfortunately didn’t do before ordering) you’ll find that this part  has leads with .035” diameter – too large to insert into the IC socket on the main board.  I believe we need .018” diameter (?) which, if I’m reading the chart correctly, would be TS-120-G-A (not A-2).

Has anyone run into this and can you confirm?   Norberto: did I get the original headers from you and is this the right part?

The new DUART/USB board is fully operational (see attached picture), and only one cable is needed to enable the VDIP1 IC. Tested at all Z80 speeds and found no issues. You will need to use the H89 USB Vtalk, etc. utilities when using HDOS or Heath CP/M. The H8 USB utilities are no longer needed.

For CP/M 3 we have a new set of USB utilities and will post them at the website.

I will send a small invoice to cover for postage as the board is free of charges. The board Qty’s will match your Z80 V3.1 orders (US orders first, as International orders are more expensive on postage).

Thanks,

Norberto

Add USB support to Z80 board - Done, waiting on boards. Board received. I will send them out once I do verify the board layout.

This is what it should be. Yes, I did provide the original headers. Sorry and will update the BOM.

I received the new headers from Mouser.  These should work but I may have to clip the pins to avoid interference with the IC socket (will know when I receive those next week). The ones you originally sent me Norberto were perfect.  Were those from Phoenix?  The link you sent was for a 12-pin connector.

Hello Glenn,

I'm not sure where I bought them, so I will need to check as it was a long time ago. Also to avoid clipping the ends, use the following SIPP part as an IC socket replacement.

First insert the IC chip into such SIPP female socket, then insert the SIPP into the board, and then solder the part into the board.

Thanks,
Norberto

Ah, no it’s the end that goes through the PC board that I’m worried about – sticks up about 1/8” above the board.  May not be a problem, we’ll see…

I can check to see if I still have some spares and send it to you.

Just let me know.

i was mostly looking to get the best part listed on the BOM.  attached picture shows the difference.  the Mouser part (TS-120-G-A) is on the left. The assembled first version daughterboard (without USB) is shown on the right – for that board I used the part Norberto sent me.  It has pins that taper at the top and was clearly designed to fit nicely in a machined IC socket.  Also the pins don’t extend much past the PC board on the top. It’s a better fit for this application if we can figure out where to order.
