In an old thread here (gee has it been 3 years already?!) I mentioned a problem with an overheating H8 transformer (see hot transformer). I’m happy to say the problem has been resolved. I felt at the time that something else was probably causing the problem and that the transformer itself was not suspect, but when I went recently to reuse the old transformer (see my recent post on “Rusty 3.0”) I found it again was running quite hot (too hot to touch after ½ hour running). The voltages it was putting out all looked normal and the computer ran fine.

Huge thank you to Terry Smedley who was able to provide me with a working transformer (Heath part 54-940. In case any of you weren’t aware the H17 uses the same transformer as the H8!) Terry had re-engineered his H17 cabinet to use a switching power supply (H17 Floppy Power/Fan Distributio) so he had the old transformer available.  I’ll probably never know what went wrong with mine - my guess is an internal short or maybe just built-up internal resistance due to age… (?) I was also able to source a 100,000 uF electrolytic for the power supply (more thanks to Terry!).

“Rusty 3.0” (no more brown/tan livery) is running great (and nice and cool!).
