It seems my 6-year old, well-loved and well-used Delorme inReach device has disappeared and needs to be replaced. It looks like the Mini will work just fine for my needs. For those of you who have purchased one since Garmin bought them, do they still work well, do they still have monthly plans you can enable/disable anytime you like? Any other tips or recommendations?

Thanks in advance,
Ray

I recommend getting the inRach Mini 2:

They work very well and the 2nd generation Mini uses a different (read: better) app than the first one.  To send messages you will need a phone that is connected to the Mini via Bluetooth but you obviously do not need a cellular connection as the unit uses the satellite network to send/receive messages.

And yes, depending on how much you want to spend on your plan, you can "pause" it and then resume it with no penalty.  I pay about $25/month and for that amount, I can send as many messages as I need to and I can pause the service if I don't anticipate using my device for the next 30 days.

Hope that helps.

Martin

There is a significant difference between the inReach Mini and the inReach Mini 2, make sure you understand what you are buying.  The biggest difference is the old model only works with the old/depreciated app (Earthmate), the Mini 2 works with the modern Garmin app (Explore) that all of their new devices connect to.
