There is momentum building in the cycling community to ride around Mt. Rainier on Thursday, July 25 even though there will be no formal RAMROD event. Also, there is a movement to take all the available reservations for timed entry for cars that morning/day. Any personal support cars will need to have one. Extra registrations will remove cars from the park that day, will help make the roads safer for cycling and will be a good protest vote. Registrations only cost $2. Make your registrations now even if you aren’t sure whether you will ride. https://www.recreation.gov/

I’ve ridden RAMROD 3 times and the route several times. There is nothing quite as glorious as the Stevens Canyon decent on a fast tandem on a sunny afternoon!!

As many of you know my husband Don was RAMROD director for a few years, and an active member of SIR. He completed 3 PBP’s, 2 of those on tandem with me.

He now is stricken by Alzheimer’s disease. I’m not sure he knows me anymore.

In his mind Don continues to ride strong. I purchased my protest ticket in honor of him and our fabulous days together in tandem.

Sounds like a good day to ride permanent 5040.
I’ve made a reservation.

Thanks, Yonnel.  I am signed up.

Tom Lawrence and I were devasted to hear of the cancellation of RAMROD.  We were planning on riding Tom’s 30th RAMROD this July (and my 27th).

Please see the message from the Deranged One on the SIR list. Do not do this.

I'm the Board Secretary of Redmond Cycling Club. We ask you to please DO NOT DO THIS. The Park will think we put you up to it, and ban RAMROD from the park forever. One moment's pleasure is not worth a lifetime of loss. We are working with the Park to hopefully be able to put on RAMROD right after Labor Day, this year. As we can see, sometimes mass protests make things worse for everyone. The authorities are the authorities, they have all the power and they aren't shy about using it. Fine to enter the park in small groups, preferably on any day other than RAMROD day. They'll expect that. Smaller groups of riding buddies are more fun anyway. Don't make vehicle reservations which you aren't going to use. What you propose will reflect badly on the cycling community.

If the park service backs down we can all cancel our reservations.

While acknowledging that RCC cannot support this grassroots movement, I don’t see how cyclists showing up en masse in July would lower their chances of getting a permit for September (assuming they even want to pursue that option). This is about showing our disappointment for the July event being cancelled and hopefully turn this into a car-free day in the Park. I am not canceling my reservation.

I think it’s selfish and shortsighted to do this. RCC respectfully asked not to do this as it will potentially jeopardize any future opportunities to hold this event which appears to be enjoyed by many on this platform and around.

As a former promoter I agree and understand the importance of not deteriorating the relationship they have with the parks so they can continue to move forward with a long lasting viable solution that works for all park users.

I can't imagine that the Parks Service would be angry that cyclists use the new reservation system on a weekday. I'll bet the entry kiosk workers will be delighted to have a super light traffic and parking day.

Given the reservation system's blind spots, this would be even better utilized on a weekend.

I would also point out that we heard from one RCC board member expressing his own views. His argument may have been valid a month ago while there was still a possibility for the July event to happen. Unfortunately that's no longer the case.
