(Retrospective) Toshiba’s Breakthrough Laptop PC

Good story about the history of the Toshiba (what we now call) laptops:

But I don’t think the timeline is too accurate because I remember the first what I would call “modern” laptop was the Data General/One which I think predated the Toshiba T1100.


That was an under-appreciated product of Data General, and I’m sure those are now collector’s items.

FWIW, The Data General One was released in 1985.

The first clamshell design was the GRiD Compass of 1982:

It was cool in other ways, too.    Magnesium case, bubble member, plasma display....
