Hi everyone -

In the mid 1990s, I knew someone who was tasked with cleaning out The Church's equipment storage area in the Bay Area. Most of stuff was big stage gear (a drum riser, monitors, etc.) that had been in storage since the end of the Gold Afternoon Fix tour and had just been racking up fees in the interim. All of it was sold off and in the liquidation I picked up a Roland JC-120 guitar amp along with a giant rolling road case with “The Church” stenciled on each side.

It only took twenty-five years to realize that I’m not likely to hit the road on a big-enough tour that requires a giant road case like this so before I put it up on Reverb, would anyone here be interested in it? The outside of the case is still in good shape but the interior foam could use some reconditioning.

New, these types of cases go for $350 and up but if anyone in Southern California wants to give me $100 I’ll even deliver it to them. I need the space!

-Chris

IF I WERE CLOSER or if shipping were cheaper!!!!! Ugh! Man I would love this!

I have similar for a Moody Blues amp.

Whoa, what a cool artifact. Also, I see a really nice SG and the bottom of a 335? (guessing)

Yeah a 'Les Paul Custom' that in reality is a 3-pickup SG. And an ES-335. The MB case was acquired at the end of a tour where shipping them back wasn't feasible so the amps (Fender 410 Bassman I believe) and cases were liquidated. The guy buying them passed away and they went to a younger guy who didn't really care about them. So I got one!

Since you guys are showing cool stuff, I thought I'd share my prized Church wall.

Nice! I like that old bass, what is that a Fender Bullet? Who signed it, SK?

It's the Fender Tele Bass used on the Under The Milky Way video. Not sure what year since they were made from '71-'79 with the humbuckers. The original '58s were made with Single Coil. I believe Mike Watt from Minutemen also played these Tele basses.
Andre, I'm sure you know this but that is a piece of musical history and hope you have it insured.
It would be great to match it up with the 760 Jazzbo MWP is playing. Of course, only two exist and both are at the Rickebacker Factory Showroom.

All these photos are cool as hell, thanks for sharing.  Ed, how did you come to own this bass?

Yes, that's the one. I have some images on the wall from the video and then a photo of my friend and SK when he gave it to me. The picture with me is nowhere to be found - hahaha classic fail there. He said it was very uncomfortable to play

It is a gem, but I don't have it insured. I think it should be in the Australian rock & roll hall of fame (if there is one). Getting a Marty guitar would be crazy. Only 2 exist of the ones in the video? What the heck! Where did Marty's go?

Art - years and years ago, SK sent an email through a friends email here to the Seance Mailing List. He auctioned that one up because he had found that his "bank account was wanting". I jumped on it.

Andre,

I recall that photo being posted on the Shadow Cabinet site but looks like it has been removed and no longer archived on Google.
In regards to the Jazzbo, here is this post I left on the Rick Forum site years ago that was taken from the Seance list. Not sure who posted it on Seance:

"I've been a great fan of Rickenbacker guitars ever since R.E.M. and the Church and the Smiths and there's this one guitar that I've always wanted to get but no one seemed to know about. It's the one that Marty is playing on the "Under the Milky Way" video. In reality, the guitar he is playing is not the actual guitar that is recorded...He's playing an acoustic Rickenbacker of some sort that has two cateye sound holes. So I've been looking everywhere for this guitar and I finally got ahold of a guy out in California at Route 66 guitars who happens to be one of THE experts on Rickenbackers. The guitar that Marty is playing in the video is only one of two made...and they are both in the possession of the owner of Rickenbacker itself, John Hall (I believe is his name). Anyway, Marty borrowed
that guitar for the video (according to the guy I talked to) and has been after John Hall to sell it to him for quite some time (unsuccessfully). So what you see is not what you hear. But rumour has it that Rickenbacker is planning on producing them in mass quantities because it is listed in their latest catalogue...Or so I am told...

There were two basses put up for sale. The other bass is a 1967 Black Fender Coronado Bass II. I have a photo of it in action during the Heyday Tour. That was the one I wanted to get but I was too late to the auction meaning I found out late about it. Story of my life. :)

I got the black Coronado from him in 1998.  Was it around the same time.

I'd been disappointed it wasn't the blue one until I found out that SK recorded using the black one!

I think Doug Berry got the Coronado. A few years ago I had the idea to buy it from Doug and gift it back to Steve as I read he loved that bass, but Doug wanted to hold on to it (can't blame him!)

Ah ha! You are the one that scored it! Nice one, Doug! You are lucky to have that one. Do you have pics to post? Was that one that was used to record Starfish? If so, it should be in a museum as well. I assume the Sunburst was used for Heyday as it was used for the tour.
I, too, wanted that Lake Placid Blue Coronado Bass II as pictured. Though I hope he fixed the faulty PU select switch which failed in the middle of a show on the GAF tour at the Wiltern theater in L.A. back in 1990. I recall that happening then pulling out the black one to save the show. Great moment  for me as I was enamored with those basses.

Ha! I was at that Wiltern show too and remember it happening - isn’t that when they started into “Dancing Barefoot”? Gawd I miss the old Wiltern when it was still in its 1940s configuration and acoustically perfect.

I think I only ever saw that bass under stage lighting - all this time I thought it was Sherwood Green rather than Lake Placid Blue. Some of those Lake Placid hues do age into a greenish color. (got into a huge conundrum over vintage Fender blues hues for my pandemic build)

Danny,

Steve has never expressed interest in having the bass back.  Marty wants the "Different Man" Rick back, but I am pretty fond of it!  When he and Olivia come back to TX, I offered to loan it to him for whatever tour they cook up with Salim Nourallah.

Edgar,

I was told the black one was used on both Starfish and GAF.  I bought a 6 string to match it.  Now I need a 12-string to have the set!

It is a great playing bass.  I've worn most of SK's signature off.

I'll dig up some pics!

Speaking as a former owner of a Coronado XII, as fantastic as they look the overall playability is dodgy at best - especially if you ever want to gig with it.
