Hi All

Travis has once again stepped up for us and made it possible for everyone to eventually have access to all the Vectric "free" projects which would otherwise be hidden behind a registration wall.
More projects will be downloaded in time and eventually the entire available list ( https://www.vectric.com/cool-stuff/projects.html ) will be available to everyone in the shop.

He has placed a project from this series onto the shop computer already, so it's available to everyone immediately:

You can see more about this project here:

I'm going to add more random interesting projects from the Vectric site from time to time, if you have a preference let me know (just be sure it's VCarve compatible).  Here is the list:

If you're interested in this Cake Pedestal project, the files are currently on the Desktop of the shop computer, in a folder called " Vectric Projects".  All the files are also on the DESIGN thumb drive in the shop in a folder of the same name (Vectric Projects), so you could potentially copy it onto your computer even if the shop computer was in use.

Enjoy, and remember to say thanks to Travis for all his help!

Ed

Ed, you were generous to mention me.
However it was your idea and your efforts.
This stream of CNC projects will be thanks to you

Thank you for contributing to the community!

Hi All

Another registration-protected, but 100% free project from the Vectric site is their "Fancy That" box:

image.png

For this one they even have a YouTube video:

And of course the full tutorial, along with the .crv files, is currently on the Desktop of the shop computer, in a folder called " Vectric Projects" or on the "DESIGN" thumb drive in a folder of the same name.

Enjoy

Susan, we’ll be scheduling the next CNC Class for mid-October right after Maker Faire.

Intro to CNC is a four-part series where you learn workflow (such as with the laser) but in addition you learn design. You’ll complete four projects in class and as a member you’ll get five free Shop slots to complete your fifth independent certification project. You’ll also get a copy of Vcarve Pro, an exceptional CNC design and toolpath generator, whose files can be run on the Shop CNC.

If interested then watch for an announcement.
Laser & 3D printing classes are also coming.
Maybe soon you can do Ed’s projects! 😊

Hi All

The 6th project in this series is what Vectric calls "The Weathered Slat Clock":

weatheredClock.png

This project is slightly more involved given that it requires a clock, but the weathering aspect might be useful in a number of other situations, so I thought it a worthy project for your consideration.

If you're interested in this project, the files are currently on the Desktop of the shop computer, in a folder called " Vectric Projects".  All the files are also on the DESIGN thumb drive in the shop in a folder of the same name (Vectric Projects), so you could potentially copy it onto your computer even if the shop computer was in use.

When I do these projects I order the unique pieces early.
In this case, I'd have ordered the clock from KlockIt.
It's model #15342 from www.klockit.com for $18.

For the "Fancy That!" box I ordered No-Mortise hinges.
They're available from LeeValley.com for $5.45/pair.
Soon I'll share with you my variation on the box.

These are great, Ed, thanks for sharing them!

These free Vectric projects are great because you're given so much!
You get the VCarve files, step-by-step instructions and helpful videos.

My daughter called asking me to make a letter box for her wedding reception
so what was my quick path to a solution? Modify this "Fancy That" project!

Below you can see what is now "The Stewarts" box.
I modified the radial lines accordingly to fit the new wording.
Also an envelope slot was added but otherwise it's the "Fancy That!" box.

Making this made my daughter happy and gave me a VCarve CNC project.

Has anyone else completed one of Ed's Vectric projects? Care to share it?

Hi All

The 7th project in this series, hopefully early enough for the holiday season, is what Vectric calls "Celestial Trundle Toys":

Reminds me of the SDFWA Toy Program.

Perhaps this could be a way for us to contribute to their efforts?

Ed's post again inspired me to practice CNC by making a Vectric project.
I thought this one could be a way to contribute to the Shop Toy program.
Maybe I'll detail my experiences making these at the next SIG meeting.

What say you?

Would you like to learn more about how to do these projects on the 24th?

Hi All,

The 8th project in this series, in keeping with the holiday season, is what Vectric calls the "Holiday Snowman Dish":

For those of us from San Diego, I googled "snow" and apparently it's something weather-related.

You can see more about this project here:

If you're interested in this project, the files are currently on the Desktop of the shop computer, in a folder called " Vectric Projects".  All the files are also on the DESIGN thumb drive in the shop in a folder of the same name (Vectric Projects), so you could potentially copy it onto your computer even if the shop computer was in use.

Just a reminder ...

These posts from Ed have inspired me to use the CNC more.
Recently I've been cranking away on some Vectric projects.
Saturday (tomorrow) I'll be explaining how easy they are to do.

Hope to see you in the morning at the Shop! Travis

Hi All,

Quick housekeeping:  the Christmas Holly Wreath project won't run on VCarve, I mistakenly grabbed one which requires Aspire, so please ignore it.  Thanks to Travis for double-checking my post and noticing the error!

The next project in this series, which does run on VCarve, still keeps with the holiday theme, and is what Vectric calls the "Christmas Sled":

You can see more about this project here;
If you're interested in this project, the files are currently on the Desktop of the shop computer, in a folder called " Vectric Projects".  All the files are also on the DESIGN thumb drive in the shop in a folder of the same name (Vectric Projects), so you could potentially copy it onto your computer even if the shop computer was in use.

Woo hoo!  Ready to do my certification project!
I have no idea which one to pick.  Eventually I want to do a 2 sided project, but not for the first one.
I also want to make all the boxes and all the light up projects.

I guess I should go see what wood I have available first and pick from there.

Are any of these "free" projects recommended for the first independent project?

Anyone who knows you would know to expect THAT! :)

While seasonally wrong, I found the Holiday Snowman Dish pretty straight forward, a good first independent project. If you want something that's a little more of a challenge, requires more bit changes, and a special end mill (which I'd loan you) then try the International Cheese Tray. However, be aware that you have to cut a piece of tile or marble to insert as the cutting surface.

I've only done a half dozen of them but they're a good guided experience.

Good luck!
