Good morning and greetings to everyone.

I recently acquired a FlexRadio 8400, intended exclusively for remote operation from my second QTH. At that location I have Internet access via Starlink, which initially caused me quite a few problems getting the radio to connect to SmartSDR.

After several unsuccessful attempts, I contacted D4Zero VPN, and I must say that Mike’s support was outstanding. In a very short time he had everything perfectly configured and working. In approximately one hour the system was 100% operational. It has been a real pleasure dealing with such professional, friendly, and efficient people.

Now I have a question that I have also mentioned to Yuri:
Is there anyone here with a setup similar to mine who is using SDC remotely, exclusively in remote mode? This is something I would like to implement, and I’m interested in knowing whether it works correctly and reliably.

Any information or shared experience would be very welcome.

Thank you very much, and have a great day.

Yes — SDC works perfectly over a local VPN, basically as if the radio was sitting in your own LAN at home 🙂
What kind of latency do you get over Starlink?
That’s an interesting number, especially for SO2R and digital modes.
In practice, the only thing you need to do differently is to manually set the IP address and UDP ports of the FlexRadio 8400 in SDC. Everything else works the same as on a local network.
If you need any help with the setup, just let me know and we’ll sort it out.

Hi Simon, good afternoon, and thank you very much for your reply; you honestly made my afternoon :-)

According to the Starlink app, the latency is around 22 ms in the different measurements I’ve taken so far. The performance has been a very pleasant surprise: when operating the Flex remotely, I don’t notice any difference at all compared to operating locally.

I haven’t configured the FT8 side yet, which is probably where latency could be more critical. I imagine that if there were any issues with delay or synchronization, that’s where they would show up first, so it will be interesting to see how it behaves once everything is up and running.

Thank you very much for both the advice and the help you’re offering. As soon as I have a bit more time, I’ll get on with the configuration following your guidance, and of course I’ll keep you informed about the results and the experience.

Many thanks, Simon, and thanks as well to Yuri.

Hi Óscar Luis,
thanks for the short report — very useful!
22 ms latency won’t be critical for FT8 at all, so you should be perfectly fine there.
Whenever you find some time, just get in touch and we’ll sort things out together 🙂
I’m glad I can help — we’ve already solved quite a few similar setups this way.
I also suggested to Yuri that he publish the working solution with ZeroTier / D4Zero, so hopefully it will help more people as well.
Yuri and his team are awesome anyway! 😄
Good luck and talk to you soon.

Hi all,

I have never been able to have the skimmer to work remotely I understand the IQ stream does not work over smart link.
That is a real pitty

That’s unfortunately how it is at the moment — the IQ stream simply doesn’t work over SmartLink.
However, I’ve shared a relatively simple and proven solution using a VPN, which does work reliably in practice.
There is still quite some room for improvement on the FlexRadio side. To be fair, the guys are clearly putting effort into it, so hopefully this will improve over time.
That said, the situation goes beyond just the missing IQ stream. From a security perspective, having to open ports on a home router in order to operate remotely is already questionable. For that reason alone, a VPN connection to the remote location is a much cleaner and safer approach.
Just my five cents 🙂

Hi Simon,

I am using fully remote SDC at my 200km far "Ham meadow". In 24/7 permanent traffic and I share it with my Ham friends to fully day occupy the station :)
Sometime i dedicate it for my contesting in CW or digi modes with OL6D callsign. My remote solution i have described at www.ok1dwq.cz web pages.
My speciality is Noder-red dashboard control of my station with user policy access and loging solution of the BAND/MODE/POWER per user permisions.
My station was succesfull in high pileups breaker DXing for example few times in Bouvet and Desecheo expeditions..

My remote station is 99.999% availaibility over 8 years long period... good and stable solution include linear amplifire and 6 antennas farm.
