Dear all, could anyone advise how comparable the US scientific diver certification is to CMAS and PADI?

Thanks in advance.

Dear Scientific Diver Community,

I am pleased to announce our next Scientific Diver course.

In 2025 there will be another course for external participants at the Scientific Diving Centre of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg. The minimum number of participants was quickly exceeded and so the course will take place. There are still a few places available.

The course will take place from 27.06. - 06.07.2025 (Part I) and 30.08. – 13.09.2025 (Part II). Information on the contents is attached to this mail and can also be found on the website of the SDC (https://tu-freiberg.de/en/sdc).

Training at the Scientific Diving Centre of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg is carried out in accordance with the ISO standards ISO 8804-1 and 8804-2, which were published in early 2024. The SDC was successfully certified by Austrian Standards on 11.10.2024. We are proud to be the first institution in the world to receive this certification.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be awarded the Advanced Scientific Diver certificate according to ISO 8804-2.

We are happy to answer any questions you may have about the course. You can contact us at thoma...@sdc.tu-freiberg.de

Please, circulate the announcement among students and any possible interested people.

We have also received enquiries about ISO certification, which we will be happy to answer and share our experiences with you.

Best greetings from Freiberg

The team at the Scientific Diving Centre

Dear Richard:
If you mean with „US scientific diver“ to actually „AAUS Scientific Diver“ then the difference is clear. PADI and CMAS are recreational diving training agencies. American Academy of Underwater Science (AAUS is training professional scientists to dive in order to execute their profession. More information at

Hi Richard:

This seems to be institution-dependent in the US and does not build on e.g. CMAS*** or PADI DiveMaster.

To get some answers, I suggest you send a request to some organisations in the US that certify scientific divers.

Easy to find these on the net, but not easy to see what is required.

Best regards

Haakon

Hi Richard,
The AAUS training is for certified recreational driver (CMAS, PADI and others) and focus on increasing your ability to do science while diving. It is a very different training then recreational driver's training.
It usually takes 2-4 weeks to be fully certified and it is more similar to the Swedish navy diver or the Australian ADAS training although not using surface supplies.
I hope it helps and you are welcome to contact privately if you have more questions.
Cheers,
Gal
