Dear Group,

I unfortunately had to delete an interesting thread because I could not redact the title which contained inappropriate content. Please be careful what you copy to this Group. From time to time I will go through and delete, or redact, comments or titles of an obvious off-topic, political, pejorative, or otherwise disrespectful nature. I hope this doesn't seem heavy handed, but we came to Google Groups with this intention, so I am just carrying that out.

Especially be careful copying emails sent from off-list - just copy the part that is about the topic and your comment.

All the best,
John

I want to give an update on our adherence to the list rules. Basically I see it becoming less and less of an issue as everyone has taken great effort to stay on topic and addressing sensitive issues and personal conflicts in a respectful way. Of course we're not 100% yet, and there are still occasional off-point invectives, so please continue to be vigilant. I hope my saying so is not itself offensive - I see this as an experiment in contrast to social norms of today's media world: Can a simple criterion of refraining from personal comments lead to more substantive discussion? So far, I think it has, rather dramatically,  and the benefit has been rapid progress in ideas and mutual understanding.

So, I want to note this progress and I would like to add that when you see a careful, respectful exchange between people, it may not be the case that everyone is just feeling good and agreeable - it could be they are taking great pains to stay appropriate, and the result is a good feeling. As said in the Vedas, the quality of the end we obtain will reflect the quality of the means by which we obtain it.

I firmly believe that everyone on this list has a tremendous contribution to make. Some of it may be difficult to understand or accept. Much may be repetitive and seemingly stuck making us think of the person as opposed to the idea. I've accepted that the tendency to characterize each other is part of human thought patterning. But once in a while there is a breakthrough, an "aha" moment. Honestly, even with intention to understand, it seems to take years or decades for a desired change of mind or understanding. We seem to have a built in sustainability protocol for our own ideas. I'm sure it must serve some evolutionary purpose. It is probably the basis of tribalism, which I think each of us has been the victim of while exploring "threshold" concepts.

I think indexing our posts might be a solution to the problem of repetition of claims or critiques, because then one can just refer to the archived post. Perhaps we can each from time to time summarize the status of our idea on a topic and give it a reference tag. Then instead of repeating it, just cite the post. Such summaries can eventually be collaged in a table of contents - perhaps a helpful start on a publication or book. Open discussion is also great, but to the extent we can put a citable stake in the ground on our present concepts it might be useful for everyone.

Also, I think it is not so helpful to include the entire backlog of prior posts in our replies - it seems needlessly redundant as the previous posts are archived. Could we be encouraged to delete all but the immediate post history being replied to?

Any thoughts?

John

Thanks, John.

"publication or book" after editing is an excellent idea. This way, our daily effort will not be lost and perhaps will be useful to the future generation.

Cheers!

Kind regards,

Rām

I think there is an immediate need to design a new online forum where meaningful discussions can take place of a similar quality as in-person discussion. Google groups and other such existing forums are grossly inefficient. This will be the next wave of social networking and a smash hit among intellectual circles. Anyone interested in working on this? We could think of partnering with Google in this regard.

Best,
Kushal.
