I'm playing with the idea of adding a "Discussion" or "Community" tab in the menu next to "Courses" at the beta website at http://schoolofopen.p2pu.org/.

It would be good for that page to reflect activity when people happen upon the site, and P2PU Discourse has a lot of activity. We would add a new category, such as "Open" and link people directly to all discussion threads that were in the category of "Open", eg. see how it looks for Learning category: http://thepeople.p2pu.org/category/learning

Not sure at this point if Discourse would completely replace this SOO google group, or be an additional community space for those who want to discuss ideas related to "open". SOO google group might still be better for some communication and logistical purposes. Not sure.

First, I'd like to know how many people here would use Discourse, have thoughts for or against trying it. And similarly those for or against this Google Group as the main mode of communication amongst SOO volunteers.

Please chime in with your two cents!

Hi all:

I don’t mind using Discourse, it’s just that I forget to check it so the email is handy b/c it comes right in front of my face. I keep forgetting about Discourse. I do wonder whether something is better for Discourse or for the email group—which sorts of things are good for each? Mostly I’ve just been using the SOO email group for SOO stuff and Discourse for P2PU stuff generally, but it doesn’t have to stay that way. I have recently figured out how to get sent emails for particular categories so I don’t miss stuff on Discourse by forgetting to check it.

This isn’t terribly helpful, probably, but basically my thoughts are that it would be good to have a separate “open” category on Discourse, and that I’d subscribe to it and get email notifications, and we could do more of our communications there if people want. I’m curious, mostly, about what sorts of things we’d discuss there vs. here if we still keep this email group.

That's a good point Christina. I do the same!

Right. I guess the question is whether others on this list would want to go through that process of setting up emails as well.

I'm not sure. I'm curious too! We could dip our toes in by adding the Open category and see what comes of it, while keeping this list. I feel like like this list is just finally getting some more traction and participation and I wouldn't want to nip that in the bud by switching venue too soon. As much as we complain about more mailing lists, I do get consistent feedback from folks that it is still the quickest, hassle-free way of communicating among a group.

Also, my .02, but the digests are quite slick.

You can subscribe to specific threads, and the profiles are a bit more socially robust than a google group.

Something else I appreciate is now the Discourse community is a repository of knowledge--so community members can help each other (and not answer similar questions several times).

I agree with Vanessa about the repository of knowledge bit. And having more discussions on Discourse, and having Discourse be more prominent on the SOO page and on P2PU generally, may allow more people to see what we're talking about. They can see on the Google group email page, but if they're on Discourse already for P2PU, they can see us and what we're doing quite easily. Or, at least, some of what we're doing! Being more accessible to everyone interested in is a good thing.

At least, that's what I think might happen. I could be wrong!

Sounds like it's worth giving a go! I'll ask Dirk to create an "Open" category and make room for it on the new landing page.

If others have thoughts for/against, feel free to chime in! We can always change our minds.

I think, Google groups would be a good platform to express one's ideas especially when an opinion is asked we have pretty new mails popping up from the subscribers , whereas when it happens to be a discourse, it's the the other way around.

Hey Sujith -- I get your concerns, and I have the same ones. An email list is so easy to use!

I think what we can try though is to do both and see what happens organically. If use of "Open" category (re this discourse discussion) takes off, then great! If not, we'll still have this Google Group.

I'll let everyone know once it's created and added to the new website.

Hey folks!

So the new category at Discourse is live and it's the only discussion space linked to from the new site as well: http://thepeople.p2pu.org/category/school-of-open

Let's try using this from now on for all SOO related discussion!
