Hello Gardeneers!

One of the schools I work with is requesting rolling garden beds. It's in an urban setting so the whole campus is asphalt. Does anyone have any suggestions for how to design and build rolling planter boxes?

Thanks in advance!

We have put raised beds right on asphalt – they just need to be at least 16” deep to get the used soil off and away from any contaminants. I think rolling planters sound expensive! 😊

How about stock tanks with casters?

Root Pouch makes 150 gallon grow bags made from recycled water bottles🙌🏾. Heavy-duty castors could be attached to the bottom of wood pallets and then the grow pot could be placed on top. I’ve never tried this but now that I think about it, I think I will!😊

Good luck finding stock tanks.

Every place I tried, didn’t have any and were either not getting any soon or could not get them at all!

And I wanted it for its actual function- horses.

The principal who wants the rolling garden beds sent me these photos of examples of what he wants. They look expensive!

We built 20” high raised beds and put them on pallets on asphalt.  They worked great with regular watering. You could put wheels on the bottom of the pallets to make them mobile. If the asphalt is rough you might want bigger wheels so you can actually move them.  I also just saw an idea in Mother Earth news that suggested using the canister for Shop Vacs which come with wheels on the bottom, are plenty deep, and can have drainage holes drilled into the bottom of the plastic canister.  Good Luck!

Those 4 x 8 rolling beds (images from Principal)  with good casters (to consistently roll) plus cap would cost around $350 per bed. Ouch.

9 pieces of 4 x 8 @ $20 per board
1 piece of cap @ $20
$150 in casters (good quality—cheaper won’t roll)

Pricey

Not sure if this will be of help, but a local supplier with whom we work produces high quality real cedar wood rolling beds of his own design, and he ships nationwide. They aren't exactly cheap, but he would likely provide a discount for nonprofit [schools], particularly if you are purchasing several. We've found them to be a great size for our elementary school children and to stand up great in our somewhat harsh climate conditions (not to mention inhospitable urban asphalt environments!) They are also so easy to assemble that the children do it themselves. If you want to contact him directly, the owner is Conor -  213.241.9160 - and you can tell him I referred you. Best of luck!

Hello,
Keep in mind the depth of soil needed to grow edibles.  Consider these minimum soil amounts: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sRTqgSjlmB9dEs6ULZG2kv7KxWI-mWZI/view?usp=sharing

Also know that soil is really heavy and the wheels need to be very sturdy to survive.
