Hi all,
I wanted to share something that
m
ight be a fun idea for you or your school community.April 21st would have been the 75th birthday of Maine folk legend David Mallett, who wrote "Garden Song" — the one that begins "inch by inch, row by row." It's been covered by Pete Seeger, John Denver, and even Kermit the Frog, and is probably the closest thing the food garden movement has to an anthem.
I met David at an event in Maine in 2009. I was coming off a campaign I ran called Eat the View, which helped lead to a food garden at the White House, and he was aware of it. He gifted me an autographed CD inscribed "Keep the gardens growing!" I've treasured it ever since.

When I recently realized this milestone birthday was coming up, it struck me as a moment worth marking.
The idea is simple: on April 21st, share a short video of yourself singing or
lip syncing a few bars of "Garden Song" — into a carrot. It's a little silly, but that's part of the spirit. A
capella, with a guitar, with your class or garden club, however you want. Photos work too — whatever fits your school's media policies. It's part of a broader effort I run through my nonprofit SeedMoney called the #CarrotokeChallenge, which raises awareness for community food gardens.
A 30-second video is all it takes. April 21st is the moment, but the challenge runs all growing season.

Even if singing into a carrot isn't your thing, you might know someone — a musician, parent, or fellow gardener — who'd enjoy it.
