Looking to connect with other organizations who work with middle schools. We have primarily focused on elementary but have a school where we already have a garden that is shifting to a middle school next year & the principal would like to offer a couple of science electives tying into our program. There are no other similar programs in our immediate area (that I'm aware of but are reaching out to a couple of programs offering place-based field trips and such). We are working on a grant to support building out this in hopes it can be replicated at other local schools. We'd like to include funds to pay stipends to consultants and/or partners as we work on this so looking for an org with experience and some capacity (grant cycle would be July 2022 - June 2024 but most curriculum development work would happen in the first year).

We have just branched out into middle school as well and would love to hear input from those more experienced in this area, as we have been learning as we go.

Knudson Middle School in Las Vegas is doing great things crossbreeding watermelons to investigate the strength of their genetic traits!! They also plant male and female plants like kiwis to observe all kinds of reproduction.

I love their approach to gardening for middle schoolers!

Common Threads works in middle school gardens in one of our county's school districts.  We've found that our middle school teachers vary in their wants from structured NGSS-aligned lessons to strictly garden tasks.  We're currently restructuring our middle school curriculum into a suite of mini-lessons that our AmeriCorps educators can pick and choose from to best meet the needs of the teachers, students, and garden.  Feel free to contact me if you'd like to chat more!

I volunteer at a middle school garden, and am also interested in following this thread.  We are a very new garden, still defining the purpose and use of the space, so I know I can learn a lot from those of you with experience.

Hi,

My name is Sorrell and I am the Education Director at Montezuma School to Farm Project in SouthWest Colorado. This thread is super useful and relevant as we also work with a middle school, but our struggle is that the needs and wants of the teachers vary significantly. We recently did a quick series of mini lessons that were aligned with NGSS where a middle school class met us in the garden, split into 3 groups and 3 of our Americorp members taught a mini lesson as the groups rotated. Mini lessons included predation in the garden, mutualism in the garden and competition in the garden which are part of the NGSS Middle School Standard Interdependent Relationships in Gardens. It was a huge success and we got a lot of positive feedback from the teachers and students. My plan is to write up these mini lessons and create a curriculum and I love Common Threads' idea of making a choose your own adventure type resource, as I think this may help solve the issue of varying needs and last minute planning that we have been experiencing.

We are interested in moving into the field of consulting in the near future and would love to help you out! We have been in our area for about 12 years and have had success pre-K through High school. Check out our website montezumaschooltofarmproject.org and we are on instagram also. Feel free to contact me anytime to chat!

I just found this set of resources: https://www.nourishlife.org/about/  Is anyone here familiar with this curriculum?  It looks like it has been widely used.

Thanks-

I love the ideas you have for middle school curriculum.  I am a science teacher who is trying to transition to a ... or rather create a middle school garden program so that I can teach my three passions - science, gardening and cooking.
