Hello everyone!
I am looking for examples of public schools that offer teachers a stipend for managing the school garden and being on a garden team, similar to stipends offered to teachers at some schools for leading after school sports or clubs. The examples could include stipends sourced from the school budget or from an external organization. I know of one example here in Austin, TX and would love to hear what other areas are doing. I have reviewed examples of funding external garden educators but not as many for teacher stipends.

Thank you,
Bianca

Our school garden is all volunteer-led. I think it's really cool when schools offer stipends to garden teachers though! :)

Hope you are doing great!

I am a health educator with Salt Lake County Health Department, and I know some of our programs have had the ability to offer teachers stipends to assist schools in nutrition and physical activity initiatives/programs. These types of activities typically also help programs’ meet grant objectives, making it a sort of ‘symbiotic’ relationship, if you will. Here at our health department, part of my job duties actually involve Farm-to-School projects/initiatives and school garden activities, so I would be happy to assist teachers working on these types of things in my county, by providing stipend money and any services/resources related to the school gardens.

I would check with your local and state health department to find out if they have any health educators working on similar initiatives.

Hope that helps,

we are about to use the sports example directly here in Watertown, MA. We are planning to start up a "Garden Team" at the middle school and hire a "Garden Coach" just as would be done for a sports team. We're also seeking grant funding for pay a stipend to "Garden Champions" at each of our 3 elementary schools. I don't have job descriptions yet, but hopefully this will start this spring. The district already pays me an hourly wage (for not many hours, but still, it's in the school budget - yay!) to be Garden Coordinator for all 5 schools in the district. I'd love to see your examples though, as I'm making this up from scratch. Most school gardens seem to have outside educators to make things work, I'm hoping we can grow new gardeners from within our staff and students. I think this will be more sustainable. And community service for middle and high school students is also very helpful, as we need they help and the are required to put in the hours to graduate.

If anybody had examples of how much the stipends are and a job description attached, that would be helpful. thanks

Hello,
The Maine School Garden Network has done some grant work around the School Garden Coach topic. Since 2016 we have worked with 5 pilot schools to define the role in settings from grades K-12, with coaches that emerged from different perspectives - from teachers, to district wide staff and even community volunteers. We worked with them to produce sample job descriptions and to define metrics that serve to evaluate the importance of designating and compensating garden leaders. We are driven by the impact that garden leadership has on sustaining critical garden programs. We offered $2000 stipends as recognition of programs and to initiate the pathway for school supported compensation of SGCs, like sports coaches. We have successfully helped 2 coaches approach their school board to present the concept and request support for a stipend to promote sustainably in the programs they've developed as volunteers. If it becomes a budget line item and the position becomes vacant it would be standard practice to recruit a new SGC.
While we are still working on this pilot program, we have made some key discoveries including :
- SGCs who emerge from community volunteers struggle to gain recognition to legitimize their programs compared to SGCs who are teachers or staff members. They typically do not have the relationship with staff and teachers they work with daily to support embedding the garden into curriculum and thereby recognizing it as a schoolwide resource. These relationships help to build advocacy for support of the garden program, it takes much more time, effort and cheerleading on behalf of community volunteers who lead gardens.
- In Maine, stipended positions are categorized within districts and as we understand our Maine Teachers Association serves to develop the range for these categories and individual positions. It's important to know how the school would categorize the SGC position in order to interpret the stipend value. For example sports coaches are not in the same category as the drama or robotics team coaches. We are planning to promote the SGC concept directly to the Maine Teachers Association so we can increase awareness of the value and widespread need.
- $2150 is what one of our pilot schools determined was suitable for a SGC stipend in their particular situation and program. It really is not a one size fits all but $2000 seems like a fair value for most schools in our area so far.

As an outcome to support more schools in adopting the SGC model, we have developed a draft SGC manual that captures many of the experiences of the pilot schools as well as over 70 links to resources to support developing garden programs and the SGC position. Though the final version won't be complete until June, I'm happy to share it here with you all. We have more school perspectives and technical garden topics to include before it's complete. I'd also be interested in any feedback you might have. Please let me know if you find it helpful or if you would add anything.

Thanks for the perspectives, this is an exciting topic!

Hello Erika-

Thanks so much for this manual and all the resources you have developed so far! Is your $2000 stipend level for the whole growing season? it's interesting that that's the figure we came up with too, more or less, for the spring summer and fall seasons - $750 stipend per season for 3 seasons, so $2250 total for each school is what we've applied for, we hope to get a grant to fund our pilot. I've had the experience myself of working with the schools from the inside, and I totally agree that that's an important connection. The way I framed it was that the Garden Coach who is also running into teachers in the lunchroom and on site for a lot of the days and weeks and attends staff meetings of various sorts is the best person to have as a coach. Parent and community volunteers are very useful in the summer months and for building projects, but to really get woven into the fabric of the school community a garden needs a champion inside the school.

Anyhow, I just read your manual briefly, I'll study up some more. Thanks so much for the info!

Judy,
Yes, the schools that view the $2000 stipend as a good fit have year round programs or clubs.
You are so right about the importance of a community connection! The school that I mentioned that came up with the $2150 uses their garden in the summer time to host their community garden club and they maintain it with direction from the SGC and community garden leader. They were supported for 3 years by a FoodCorps service member which served to not only develop their program and embed it in the school curriculum and culture, but also put a spotlight on the importance of leadership. This accelerated their process for seeking support and their school board presentation and script are available in the draft SGC manual.
Best wishes on your school garden endeavors, I do look forward to any feedback that you may have.
Thank you,
Erika

Hi Erika and Judy,

Thank you so much! This discussion and these resources have been incredible.

Could you both share how much time is expected of your garden coaches? What are the expectations (or recommendations) for how much time they’ll spend in maintaining the garden vs teaching vs. community engagement?

All the best,

Tristana

Tristana,
The Maine School Garden Network is a non-profit organization that supports school gardens statewide. We are a support organization and do not have our own gardens or coaches but rather work to support all school gardens and their unique needs.
We realize that there is no "one size fits all" as it cokes to defining the role of a SGC, but recognize that this manual serves as a general tool to support a diversity of garden programs and their leadership.  I think digging into some of the examples from the pilots who have shared their experiences in the manual I attached you can see what some of those roles entail regarding time and duties.
Thank you,
Erika

Erika, thank you for sharing your perspective and resources! Could you (and others) provide insight into funding sources for the stipend and any examples of stipends that are initially funded externally and gradually integrated into the school budget? What is the long-term plan for the stipend funding?

I gathered that the County Health Dept., grants, and the Maine School Garden Network were the primary ways in which the above examples of stipends were funded or planning to be funded. Any other ideas or examples out there?

Thanks!
Bianca

Here in Watertown, MA we have 5 schools in our district - 3 elementary schools, one middle and one high school. Years ago, we started with gardens built and used by teachers and parents with some community volunteer support. We moved to grant funded gardens with grants written by parents and teachers. It was all about the individuals who saw the huge value in gardens for student learning on so many levels. With the help of many and leadership from one dedicated principal and one parent, our first school garden was approved by the school committee with a 5 year plan in 2013.

My position as Garden Coordinator for the district was grant funded for 2 years beginning in fall 2014. It was a grant funded pilot position for 2 years. The district picked up the funding in FY17 and continues to fund the position in FY18, level funded. I'm budgeted for 600 hours for the year, which comes to an average of 15 hours a week 40 weeks a year, as an hourly position, taking the winter mostly off. The reality is that in the spring and fall are the most busy times, and my hours average more like 20-25 hours a week for those months. I do some summer programming and supervise volunteers in summer, but fewer hours per week. In winter is mostly planning and doing some PD with teachers, but not much of that as there is not much funding for this. My main responsibility is to coordinate the gardens at the 3 elementary schools plus oversee things at the high school. Even as I write this things are evolving, and we now have a Garden Team at the middle schools. But even as I write this things are evolving, and we now have a Garden Team at the middle schools with a garden coach funded from their afterschool clubs and sports teams budget, I'm not sure how that works. But yay! it meets twice a week this spring and again in the fall is the plan.

Now going into our 3rd year of district funding in FY19 (pretty sure about this), we're working on grant funding 3 new positions who would be those garden managers on site at our 3 elementary schools. We'd like to fund stipends for one Garden Champion (or manager or liaison?) at each elementary school for 15 - 25 hours per season (spring, summer, fall), that would be 45 - 75 hours per year. We are working on a job description for this modeled on existing stipended positions in the schools. We hope to get it funded in the fall of 2018 as a pilot, and perhaps the district will pick it up in FY19. We'll see.

As there is more emphasis on project based learning and our science curriculum now includes also engineering and technology, the garden becomes a more valuable asset. Like a "Maker Space", it's a place where kids can really get into real world issues and solve real problems, with something to show for their efforts that is lasting and authentic. Hopefully gardens will become another resource similar to these specialized spaces as the program evolves.

okay, I've been composing this for a month, i hope it's helpful. When the gardens are planted and the kids gone for the summer, hopefully I can pay attention to some of this again. Good luck to us all ! it's so important for today's kids in so many ways

Hi All,

I coordinate a school-based SNAP-Ed program in Iowa. We recently released an RFP to continue the program for another six years. Included in the RFP was a farm to school project. Applicants can receive up to $6,000 for the project. Eligible applicants are low-income schools or other government or non-profit agency applying on behalf of the school. The source of these funds are SNAP-Ed. The farm to school projects help fulfill SNAP-Ed's requirement to implement policy, system and environmental change approaches.

Here is the description of the farm to school project from the RFP:

Farm to school activities included in this RFP must be provided at one or more eligible school buildings or locations that primarily
serve low-income students from eligible school buildings (e.g., nearby garden or Summer Food Service Program site). Some farm to school activities are more appropriate at the district level, such as local produce procurement, and are allowed as long as eligible building(s) benefit from the activity. Farm to school activities may target any grade level within eligible school buildings. Activities may take place during the school day, after-school programs or during summer programs.

Applicants applying for farm to school must designate a farm to school coordinator who will
participate and facilitate the activities as follows:
1. Participate on the school district wellness committee to represent farm to school.
2. Partner with key school personnel (e.g., principal, classroom teachers, food service
director, etc.) and community partners (e.g., parents, local farmers/growers, volunteers,
students, etc.) to develop and implement farm to school activities.
3. Create and implement a farm to school plan. The plan must focus on one or both of the
following outcomes:
a. Establish, reinvigorate or maintain food gardens at eligible schools. Garden sites not located at eligible schools are allowed if the applicant verifies they are used primarily by students participating in free or reduced-price meals from eligible schools.
b. Incorporate and promote local fruits and vegetables in school nutrition programs on a regular basis (e.g., National School Lunch Program, National Breakfast Program, Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, Summer Food Service Program, Afterschool Snack Service, Pick a better snack TM lessons).
In addition to core activities, the farm to school plan may include coordination or delivery of agriculture-based or garden-based nutrition lessons.
4. Participate in evaluation activities under the direction of the Department or an outside evaluator. This includes data entry into the Program Evaluation And Reporting System (PEARS) used in SNAP-Ed.
5. Attend a one-day face-to-face training in the Des Moines area with other farm to school awardees. The Department anticipates this training event to take place fall 2018 and to be repeated annually.
6. Participate in online meetings scheduled with the Department. Expect meetings to occur quarterly.

Thought I would share this in case it is helpful to someone.

Thanks,

Suzy Wilson, RDN, LD
