Saving the SC27 molds

Hi class, 

With the help of the DeVries' we have tracked the molds to a man named Jim Fahey in Madison, WI. Mark got a chance to speak with him today and he said the molds are destined to the dump within two weeks. The molds, especially the deck mold stored upside down, are in good shape.

If there was ever a chance to save the molds, now would be the time. We, as owners of a 27, will need these molds if we ever want to replace our decks, like many of the Moore24s are starting to do. 

Mark's dad owns a semi-truck and is willing to pick the molds up in Madison. 

We are looking for someone who has space to store the molds (perhaps even temporarily) and about $500 for diesel gas. Is the national class willing to be owners of the mold (like the express27 fleet)?

To all: Spread the word and chime in. I'd like to know if there's any other interest in building new boats or decks. Unfortunately, they built them too well to begin with!

The only cost as of now is the diesel for the truck to WI and back and potentially storage for the molds until something long term can be figured out...

Ill reach out to Berkeley Marine Center, who builds the Antrim's and see if they are interested in helping out with storage of the mold... If you look at them on google earth you can see they have space on their roof.

Hi all,

I bought a rudder from Alar and showed it to Dave Scoggins when Jersey girl first hit the water. He was a pro and reshaped the rudder that still remains on JG today. (have a look). Also as long as all are excited about the sc-27 mold everyone should consider the Keel. This original mold has disappeared over the years unless the group up north has it. The keel mold on JG was made by myself and poured by a group in Watsonville.

I think it was Doug Brown (bill lee would know) he poured all the early SC boats,

I spoke with Ruben (Yard Manager) at BMC. He thought it was funny I was bringing it up as they are expecting to get the Moore 24 mold (he is Moore sailor) in the near future. He said he would run it by Cree (BMC Owner) and get back to me. 

He mentioned that the roof does indeed have space for the molds...

Maybe the next generation can be Berkeley 27s? :winkwinknudgenudge: 😬

This is just my opinion, and it comes from the fact mostly that I just rebuilt my deck and did all that work. This deck thing,  seems like an unrealistic endeavor. I feel its most efficient to just rebuild your existing deck. Really think about how much work this actually is and how expensive it would be. I just think it's the wrong fleet to be putting new decks on and upgrading rudders. I would say if you have a boat that needs to be saved, save it! Work on it! Take the rotten core out, all that good stuff!

 I also say this, I don't care which way the rudder thing goes and I'm totally open to racing against ellipticals and actually seeing what the advantages and disadvantages are. Im not gonna get one, I have a newish rudder that steers fine. But say having an elliptical is actually faster, and it starts to be no fun racing against one, what then?  It would start getting down to the nitpicky reasons about why a boat is fast... we have boats with inhaulers now. I totally wouldn't mind doing all this extra fast boat stuff, but what if some boats aren't upgrading their setups and they don't have as good of a chance? I like getting faster but I also like other people to have the same advantages. That's why I haven't gone to inhaulers. I have a sail that would love them...

If anyone’s ever in Duluth, buy Eric Thomas at Barker’s Island Marina a beer. He was the final missing link to Jim Fahey. For posterity, according to Eric three SC27s were built in Duluth between 1988 and 1990, one of them by Eric himself. The molds moved from Duluth (Alar Yachts near Lake Superior) to Madison about 10 years ago, and have been sitting on Jim’s property ever since.

Buzz was saying he sold those molds to that guy for 12k and said it could cost a pretty penny to get them here like 10k.  so 500 dollars in gas is a pretty good deal. I doubt they're nice to look at as a museum peice,  but it would be nice as a class to at least have the molds. Does anyone actually plan on swapping their deck out or have any idea how much it would cost to do it?    

Also,  in Santa Cruz,  there's no one left to do a keel repair let alone have a place to replace a deck. I feel bad for the guy who would have to store them. 

I really do think it would be cool to have them... I just don't see why it would be worth it to do this,  especially for the guy who has to keep them.

There was a guy on Sailing Anarchy recently who hired a naval architect to design a new deck for a fleet of SC 27's.  The plan was to build a new deck mold and pop some decks out.  

If the original deck mold had been available he might have used it.

I think Ian Klitza has the sc27 drawings, and drew Harper wanted to build a completely new style deck, no combings, cut back companion way, open transon... there was a discussion on face book, it sounded like it would be good for the guy because he runs a charter program and loves the 27... but it sounded like a lot of people said just design a new boat at that point.

Hi All,

Mark here reporting in. I called Jim and from a short talk I had with him I got that he has the keel, hull, and deck molds. Not sure about the rudder mold, will ask. I called him him today and got the voicemail, so more to come later. 

I'm going to figure out what it will take to get them to California, as Rachel and I both think they should be saved. The storage is definitely going to be a problem, but hopefully we can come up with something. As a boatbuilder I can say that at some point a far gone deck would be easier and cheaper to just replace. When you're replacing half your core, fairing,  painting, and nonskidding, you're much better off with a new part. I think the class should have the molds if we can. Looks like a lot of us want to keep them around. 

Also, Berkeley Marine Center did not have a part in building the new antrim 27.  Left Coast Composites built the hull, deck, and the interior of the new Antrim 27 "Io", and GC Rigging and Composites did the rest. Just want to make that straight as I was part of that project.

Happy New Year everybody,

Here is an update on the molds. I spoke with Jim about exactly what he has and how it can be moved. He does have the rudder mold, which he will keep if he cuts up the molds and will be available to build rudders for anyone who wants one. Jim will however give away the rudder mold if all the molds get picked up with it, which are the hull, deck, keel, and rudder molds. I thought I could get my dad to pick up the mold, he owns a commercial truck with a 53' foot trailer, however from talking to Jim it wouldn't be possible to get in the trailer due to no forklift or any equipment that could make it happen, plus the hull mold might be too wide. So Jim's suggestion was renting a u-haul car trailer one way from there, he says that's how he's done it before and that it's possible to get the molds on the trailer. He is waiting to find out what we want/can do, sounds like he might be busy for a few days and wont cut them just yet. I would love to help save the molds somehow, but my resources fall short there. At this point we would need someone who owns a 3/4 ton truck, and money for diesel there and back and for renting the uhaul... Sounds like Berkeley Marine Center would be able to store the molds.
