Hey Saturday crew!
For many many years we have been able to use Big Rec field for frisbee pickup, and that game has grown and flourished thanks to the city allowing us to use these fields without reservations when the space is open!
However, after this past weekend, some members of our community received emails from Parks and Rec about the condition of the fields after they were used during and after the rain we had on Saturday, I assume they found our listed games on
pickupultimate.com, etc, but either way they specifically called out the frisbee community for tearing up the fields (including pictures of the damage). They advised us that permits are needed to use these fields, and to not use these fields in the rain.
Obviously, getting permits and charging players would be less than ideal, and warrants further discussion if it becomes an enforced issue. But in the meantime, if we want any chance of continuing this awesome free pickup game and using Big Rec,
‼️ DONT PLAY IN THE RAIN OR WHEN THE FIELD IS WET!!!! ‼️
‼️That includes this upcoming Saturday, where the forecast calls for rain all day!‼️
And before anyone complains or gives me crap, remember that this doesn’t just affect you as an individual because you don’t get to play frisbee on one rainy day, it affects the entire ultimate community that wants to use or reserve fields anywhere in the city (including BADA leagues), and it affects everyone within and outside that community that uses Big Rec after we tear it to shreds. It also affects the groundskeepers at parks and rec who have to fix the fields constantly. If you would like to direct your frustration somewhere, I suggest you look to anyone who continues to use the fields in the rain, because that will likely result in the end of the pickup game all together.
Luckily, we have a lot of great, invested members of our community that want to help organize solutions to help us play regardless of the weather, including renting or utilizing open turf fields elsewhere in the city when grass fields aren’t available! If you’d like to stay up to date on the discussion, check out the Let’s Toss group me, which has become a sort of unofficial pickup messaging channel, for updates. There may even be enough momentum to get a Goalty and ultimate game going this Saturday on an open turf field (Minnie and lovie ward).
If you got to this point in the email, thanks for listening. I love this community and everyone in it, and hope that we can work together to keep the pickup game going without damaging the fields or our relationship with parks and rec!
